Women’s NCAA D1 Regionals

Recommended Posts

Just got home from watching the first round of regionals at Bermuda Run CC. It was free to get in. The golf was fantastic. A young lady from Wake Forest played at my course through high school, so several other guys came out to follow her, too. If anyone is close to this, or any other regional sites, I highly recommend going. You will see some really good golf.

Don't underestimate the Pepperdine women golfers.. Lion Higo's 5 under 67 tied the Pepperdine program record for lowest 18 hole score in an NCAA Regional.

Played Forest Akers a couple of weeks ago with my daughter  prepping for US  Jr Girls qualifier - very cool to see regionals there.   Amazing to have access to that place to be able to golf there.  Cool stuff. #gogreen

Dartmouth only 51 shots off the lead after 2 rounds; watch out for Round 3:

finished 62 shots back

only lost 11 strokes to Arkansas (winner) in the last round, so significant progress vs the 25.5 stroke avg for rounds 1 & 2!

Talked to UCLA coach and apparently the wind was gnarly...so different sides of the tee sheet benefited or were punished. UCLA in afternoon yesterday...you can see the scores so much higher than their typical. Not absolving Dartmouth, but their team might have been playing into the wind whereas Arkansas playing in the clear at a different time of day. I don't know, but that many shots might be explained beyond them just being 50 shots worse...

Didn't Dartmouth improve on the last day? Or were they always on the wrong side of the tee sheet? Lastly, did anyone on the same tee sheet fare well or significantly better?

Dartmouth seems to consistently recruit top 100-ranked players every graduating class.

2024: #36 (JGS ranking as of signing)

2023: #48, #67, #119

2022: #81

Given the strength of players they recruit, how could they have underperformed so much in NCAA Regionals (5 strokes from last)?

Maybe Hanover, NH is not an ideal location to improve one's game?

Isn't specifically going to IVY for the golf akin to going to a, say Alabama or Arizona state, for the computer science program?

Another thought is perhaps JGS ranking is not particularly indicative of skill/desire/potential?

Or it could just be the wind.

How many majors would Scottie or Morikawa win if they had gone to Dartmouth for 4 years instead of UT or Cal?

Heck, if Miles Russell decides to go to Dartmouth...how will he play in big tournaments given the winters/course load?

I think some of it is that most Ivy girls are accurate (and shorter off the tee), but a good chunk of it is that with the academic rigor, less practice time & fewer tournaments, it's near impossible to keep up with the top golf programs.

How did a thread on NCAA regionals dissolve into a discussion on Dartmouth golf?  These boards are frustrating sometimes.

I cant speak for the others, for me it's as simple as being interested in results beyond my expectations and what may have led to them.

I was interested in Ding Wen Yi shooting nearly 30 under.

I was interested in a Columbia kid shooting 60+ over.

I have been interested in USC's plight this past year.

In recruiting I've been interested particularly at seeing Duke go against the grain of merely selecting high ranked kids. Whereas Princeton has gone away from its traditional Modus operandi and early recruited (for them) high ranked kids.

In junior golf it's been the public emergence of Miles Russell and Asterisk Talley (who by the way just qualified for the US open).

The Dartmouth situation is just another one amongst many that are of interest. If we were on some maths site, I suspect people would be interested if say a University of Chicago went and performed shockingly bad in a Putnam style maths contest.
