2024 NCAA DI Golf Championships Discussion

The University of Texas at Austin is hosting the men and women's championships with the Longhorn logo featured on the pin flags.  Does anyone know why they being played in California and not Texas?

They wanted a neutral site. For instance, when it had been hosted at Grayhawk there was a team that had played the course 81 times versus the one or two practice rounds that other schools got.

My understanding is that the NCAA left Grayhawk because the grass is in a transitional period in Vegas this time of year. As far as playing the course, the NCAA has bylaws in Golf that DQ schools for playing any practice rounds at National, Regional, Conference championships other than the designated official practice rounds. I don't remember the exact time frame, but not allowed to play from within a 2-4 week time frame. This way no one know the speed of the greens etc. A player can be DQ's if they show up to play on their own as well.

Goes into why La Costa and why Texas is hosting.

Big fan of the vision but will say - much of what they are trying to do I feel was already accomplished by having a three year run at the same venue with Grayhawk.  The finishing stretch of 16-18 was memorable (drivable par 4, tough but short par 3, and long par 4 (converted par 5).

Will be fun to learn more about the new venue and remodel, but has lots to live up to from the previous 3 years.  Knowing Hanse was involved should help.

They need great weather to keep the tournament(s) on schedule, especially since there is tv coverage. Arizona and Southern California meet this criteria. They also need a course that can be dedicated for 3+ weeks or however long it takes to do setup/prep and hold two tournaments.

Does anyone know what some of the Stanford women such as Rachel Heck and Sadie Englemann were wearing on their cheeks that made it look like they had a skin rash? I know it's partially the result of the poor resolution of the TV broadcast but I'm wondering what was the original visual intent.

Edit: I found a related photo.

I didn't watch any of it, but I'm assuming it was probably a team/school logo sticker or face paint. That seems to be pretty common on the women's collegiate side of things.

Perhaps it got smudged or disfigured throughout the course of the round.

Yeah that jumped out to me. Definitely looked like they were extras in a walking dead episode.

The other thing that jumped out to me was poor Natalie Vo on #16 against Megha Ganne. She looked like she had never played out of a bunker before...that was tough to watch. Must have just been the pressure.

Noticed it as well. Heck looked like she had genuine acne breakout from something or sun poisoning - Englemann looked like she was wearing a pink/purple sparkly blush makeup on her left cheek. I guess it's posisble Heck also had some sort of makeup on but maybe with larger sparkles? Not sure tbh.

Yea....bit of a head scratcher since Christo was obv VERY rusty - fell apart on those last three holes.  Still proud of Tai winning the individual - he held off a number of impressive players (including Sargent).

Watched the final round of the mens stroke play. They really need to do something about how involved the coaches can get, they slow play down to a crawl, took the last groups over 5 1/2 hours to play. Maybe limit advice to tee box only then get the h*** out of the way and let the kids play. Sargent had two coaches with him at the end discussing what he should do on each shot.

Lamprecht gave me 'spoiled brat' vibes near the end of his match when he threw the flag on the ground and how he handled himself. As a parent of a junior golfer, if I ever saw my son behave like he did we would be having a talk... even if he was 6' 8".

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

is anyone surprised all 4 lower seeds beat the higher ones in the Quarterfinals?

seems like some legit upsets

Auburn was ranked the #1 team in the country before heading into the NCAA championship and FSU was ranked 5 or 6. No surprise Auburn beat up on UVA and FSU beating UNC was a toss up.

THE Ohio State beating Vandy was a bit of surprise but Wallin has been on a heater this week until running into Koivun who is probably the best college golfer playing right now.

Illinois losing to GT wasn't a surprise either. They were only ranked as high as they were because Clippd uses a points based system for ranking that boosted them because of the 'strength of schedule'.

This championship has been a dud IMO. The course might be too difficult for college golfers but I do understand it's probably because of the newness and the greens being harder than my driveway.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Wallin battled back and probably beats Koivun without the TV tower there on #17 to stop the ball in the playoff. It is what it is and it was there the whole week and part of the course. But, I think it was pure luck to hit it and not even planned like you sometimes see with TIO on the tour and much bigger backstops. If the tower isn't there the ball roles further into the rough with trees and pretty short sided running away on the chip.
