The New La Costa (NCAA Championships)

Recommended Posts

The NCAA golf championship is currently underway for the men at the new renovated La Costa.

There are few pictures released of the new La Costa, but this blog post has photos of every hole on the course. Really detailed photos!

Pretty fascinating what Gil Hanse did to a course that doesn't have the best reputation for being interesting!

Great episode on the Fried Egg Podcast talking about how this all came about. Interesting listen.

Just saw the course yesterday. I played it before the remodel and it looks much tighter with long grass throughout the course

and more well placed bunkers. It looks like it will require more strategy and well placed tee shots than before. I’m excited to play it once it opens up to guests.

It’s an interesting choice for the NCAA to be looking at for a long term home.  It’s not that visually appealing of a property to begin with, even after this redo.  I thought Grayhawk was a great place for this tournament.  Wonder why they chose to leave there after the past few years.

Not sure I like having a "permanent" stop for the NCAAs. It's fine for baseball or tennis, etc where the field/court is fairly standard. Not so of course in golf. Having a multi-year deal makes sense as it's probably difficult to get courses willing to commit 2 weeks but would still rather see it move around a bit. Will likely still be a western US bias due to Golf Channel desire to have the afternoon/evening time slot.

Or if you are going to make it permanent, don't bias it to one coast or the other.  Not sure how you would accomplish that and not make it advantageous to Texas or Oklahoma or other centrally located schools.  Seems reason enough not to have a permanent home all together.

I was at our club bar eating dinner the other night when they had the women's tournament on tv.  Visually the course looked interesting, albeit that is coming from someone who seems predominantly parkland style courses.  There was too much going on that evening for me to really digest the golf and the course however.

Just seems like here recently everything Hanse and his team touches is lauded so don't see why La Costa would not have greatly improved as well.  Dick Wilson designs aren't typically architecturally "great," but they serve their purpose when looked at with the perspective of when, why and for whom they were built.

#1 has a redan-esque look to the green.  At 415 yards I doubt any college golfer is worried with running one up on the green though.

Even if it wasn't a permanent site it would have stayed in pacific time zone due to TV ratings and exposure.

Yeah, I read the background and the desire to keep it in primetime on the one website linked.  I get it, I don't like it.  I don't think it is fair either.  I won't lose sleep over it though.

I don't mind the idea of a long-term home. For those of us who will watch, we'll become familiar and know what to expect from different shots based on history. Like the Masters are ANGC. Not sure if this is THE course to accomplish it, but the idea itself I'm on board with.

@smashdn the podcast mentioned the reason Texas is hosting is because NCAA won't let it be a school's home course. So while they are closer proximity to play occasionally, a SDSU or something won't have a true home course advantage.

While I was a bit confused (especially not knowing about the reno), I think its been a fun course to watch (especially in the team match play).

Literally all Gil Hanse does when he "renovates" classic courses is clear most of the trees, widen the fairways, and set the back tees further back. It's like the golf version of those home renovation TV shows where all they do is knock down the kitchen wall as an "open floor concept".

he didn't do that at Colonial in Fort Worth.

He must be a great salesman to convince everyone in golf that he is a good architect while doing horrible work.

So all he does is introduce playability for average players and strategy for better players? (via width, length and greens that reward/punish position).

Plus more memorability via bunker aesthetics and green complexes.

Yea can't see why anyone would want that.

Can't imagine why a resort like OMNI would want more playability for average players...
