Your BEST contact drills....

colu41

Recommended Posts

I've really been focusing on improving my swing/game this year, and am making really good progress. Finally broke 80!

Now that my swing is "headed in the right direction", what are the best drills YOU personallly have used, that have made you a better ball striker?

For the current clubs I was fitted for, my miss seems to be towards the toe. Yes, it may be a slight EE issue, but I would say 90% of it has been alleviated. So as of now my swing is comfortable, and decent, just need to work on my contact.

BTW, this was from one of my better sessions on the backyard net. Sometimes have a few stragglers way outside on the toe. I've learned to warm up a bit, before using the tape 😆 first few shots can get ugly

congrats on breaking 80!

If you want to become a better ball striker, focus diligently on addressing what is causing your issues.  If you are hitting it on the toe, work on whatever flaw is causing it and stick with it every single time you are on the range. Over time you will hit the ball better.  As you hit the ball better, your misses will get smaller and breaking 80 will become a consistent endeavor.

I am not great at ball striking but I have noticed intent and differential practice helps me a lot. Learning to consciously hit different parts of the face. For example, during my last range session, after working on drills from my coach, I worked on hitting toe, then heel, then center, then toe, then heel, etc..

I plan to get a lesson later this year. Just hoped for something to work on in the meantime. Thank you!

Just make sure it's someone qualified and seriously stick with it.  Assuming the instructor is correct, I promise it will pay off.  Don't give up after a week or a month, say it's not working, and then try something different.  A different feel to accomplish the same fix is fine but jumping from tip to tip is no good.

Case in point, I hit balls for 2-3 hours or play most every Saturday/Sunday.  It honestly takes me about a year to get comfortable with a change to the point where I don't have to drill on it every range session.

A nearby municipal golf course has a tilted chipping green that allows contact drills from either fairway grass or the rough. Most folks practice from the easy lies, chipping uphill.

I've been practicing more difficult lies, chipping downhill and putting enough spin on the ball to stop it on the green.  As well as sidehill lies and pitching out of the rough.

With just three balls in play I'll take the time to make each shot count, just like playing a round.  It helps to gauge the rough with a practice stroke or two.

Much different than hitting off a mat.

I golf about 6 rounds a month. And I'd say I average 3-4 hours a week practice in the net at home. I know every swing tweek is different but, the one that really got me hitting my irons straighter this year took me probably a full month or two to be comfortable with. Although was just a takeaway drill, any rotation type drills really mess with my head and take me forever to get down.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
