How many of you play your driver at 44.5"

Like the results??

Just curious how many have shortened their drivers to 44.5"? Are you happy with the results?? I would think the control would be better, but do you notice any loss in distance? Is ballflight higher, lower or about the same with a 44.5 compared to a 45"?

I know this has been discussed before but I did not have much luck doing a search.

I'm still messing with the weight, but honestly, I haven't really seen any difference in the weeks since I've taken 1/2" off my hibore. distance has definetly not decreased. I'm happy I made the change. . .once I've got the weight just right it'll really be a bomber.

Optimum length for me is 44 1/2". I hit the ball more consistently, further and straighter than I do with anything longer.

 

I think 90% of modern drivers are sold with over-long shafts fitted as standard, and a great number of golfers are using shafts that are too long for them.

I too was curious to see the results on a 44.5" driver, so I cut mine down last year and added some lead tape to get the swing weight back up. I am very happy with the results. I'm more consistent and confident with my driver at this length. I've gained distance on average. I would never order another driver longer than 44.5", I might even try 44" this summer.

I initially cut mine down to stiffen it up to flatten my ballflight. After the change, I've noticed a longer average distance throughout the round and misses aren't quite so exagerrated. Its easier to control and much more reliable. I do get lower ballflight than longer drivers but its a minute difference. I'd recommend everybody try a shorter driver...

2 years ago, I would build EVERY driver 46". Not any more.

Just about every driver I have is no longer than 44.5". I don't

have a distance problem, I hit it plenty long. Just can't hit

the D*MN thing straight. Shorter is deffinetly better. Am fairly

happy now. IMO. :good:

I think taking a half inch to three quarters of an inch off your driver would have little to no affect on your driving distance. If your not comfortable with a 45 inch driver, defintely take off some. I did it once with a Titliest 975J, took off a quarter inch and hit it straighter with no loss of distance.

I like 44.5 or even 44, I am only 5'7" and these 45.5 and longer drivers are to upright for me, making me hit a long draw or snaphook, making the driver shorter has made me be able to hit it dead straight or work it either way b/c the driver seems to be standard on the lie, the longer drivers to me made the driver way too upright and I fought a huge draw or hook, no distance loss at all.

I now play my driver at 44.5" and I love it. I hit more fairways and I actually gained some yardage.

Been playing all my past gamers & current one at 44.5". Works for me...Not messing with it at all. Way more control, and no distance loss whatsoever. Ballflight is mid/high trajectory.

I ordered my Bridgestone j33r 460. 44.5" and love it.

I play mine at 44.5. Just feels comfortable at that lentgh and feels like I have way more control.

I've been thinking of shortening too, but where do measure from? I have a 905R do I measure from the sole?

I HAD MY TAYLORMADE TP R7 RE-SHAFTED WITH A DIAMANA AT 44.5----I CANT SEE PLAYING 45 INCH DRIVER AND DEFINITELY WOULD NEVER PLAY 45.5 OR MORE----REMEMBER THE DAYS WHEN A STANDARD LENGTH DRIVER WAS 43.5----SO THEY ADD A MONSTROUS HEAD AND A SHAFT LENGTH OF 45 AND ALL IN THE SUDDEN EVERONE GAINED 30 YARDS---ITS SHAFT LENGTH JUST AS MUCH AS THE 460 HEADS----TOO BAD WE CANT GO BACK TO PERSIMMON AND FORGED BLADES FOR EVERYONE---WHAT AN EQUALIZER--TOU THAN WOULD HAVE TO BE FORCED TO BECOME A BETTER BALLSTRIKER----

I have been using 44.5" for a couple of years. I don't know how much difference it really makes with my ball striking, but I am a lot more comfortable with that length than 45". When standard driver length was 43", I used 42 3/4". Man, long time ago...

I went to my club today and put the marking tape on the face and hit about 1/2 dozen balls with my D2, every shot hit the same exact spot just a bit on the heel side of the center, probably about 3/8" off center.

 

 

If a shaft is too long will it produce shots on the heel side of center?
