am I wasting time?

The shaft is a little soft (YSQ).

If I tip .5" and extend .5" will I get at least get 1/3 flex stiffer or will it be pretty much the same and useless?

It will definitely stiffen the shaft up a bit. How much I'm not quite sure.

 

I think a 1" tip is generally considered to be about 1/2 a flex.

depends on the shaft itself but in most cases, tipping a shaft 1" will stiffen it quite a bit

The key here is to measure the bore depth of the driver. If its over 1 1/4" deep, most guys will tip trim at least one inch. If you feel like you're in between flexes, there is no problem tip trimming 1.5". The YSQ has a 4" parallel tip so its designed to perform the same for a bore through non-tipped as it would with a standard bore tipped 1.0"

 

In regards to 1/3 flex and 1/2 flex stiffer after trimming, yes the frequency will change, but it doesn't necessarily change the overall bend profile of the shaft. Frequency just measures a small portion of the shaft.

Actually it has nothing to do with the depth of the bore.

 

The bottom of the bore to ground measurement is what's interesting - not how deep the hole is.

 

If the BBGM is between 1-1 1/2", you have a "standard bore" - and this is what the tip trimming recommendations are based on unless the shaft specifically identifies itself as being for a bore thru head.

 

The reason that the BBGM is interesting has to do with how much BUTT remains on the shaft in the completed club.

 

The shaft does not bend simply at the tip - it bends over it's entire length. By tip trimming a shaft before installation, what you do is to replace the softer tip section with the stiffer butt section in the total length of the club. This results in the shat playing stiffer (how much exactly will depend on the shaft model).

 

When you insert a shaft in a bore thru head, that is the same as tipping the shaft that 1-1 1/2" BBGM you have in a standard bore. More of the BUTT is used in the total length of the golf club in a bore thru head.

 

If you have a blind bore with a 1/2" BBGM, that's the same as tipping the shaft 1/2" in a head with a 1" BBGM.

 

If you have a shaft with a 2" BBGM, that shaft will play softer than a shaft with a 1" BBGM - since you will have 1" LESS BUTT in the total length of the club - 1" more TIP will stick out of the hosel.

 

So the depth of the hosel bore is not the interesting part here - it's what's left from the bottom of the hosel bore to the ground line - or BBGM.
