re-shafting fairway woods

if i wnt to put a new shaft in my 3 wood, do i just use a driver shaft and cut it down? it is a simple question for most of you but it has always confused me as i have never seen a fairway shaft available,

Some shafts are specifically designed for fairway woods (usually in terms of their weight) whilst others are a generic design that can be fitted to either a driver or FW.

 

In the case of the latter, the shaft is cut to fit by trimming an appropriate amount from the tip to adjust the flex and then butt trimming to length. Most shaft manufacturers publish or supply a trimming chart for each shaft in their range that you can consult before getting busy with the saw blade. The type of head (e.g. thru bore, standard bore or blind bore) will have a bearing upon the necessary tip trimming, as will your individual preference for tip trimming to adjust the flex. Fairway woods generally require more trimming from the tip than an equivalent driver.

 

If you're inserting the shaft into a bore thru head, the parallel tip section (PTS) becomes important. If a shaft is to be tipped an appreciable amount, as it may be in the case of a fairway wood, you need to be sure that you've got sufficient shaft to insert into the clubhead before it starts to thicken above the PTS.

 

Don't be alarmed by the above; it's a relatively simple calculation. It must be, since I can do it.

And yes, some shafts are specifically for the fairway wood, and some are for both drivers and FW's. So there's a large variety to choose from.
