Hogan Apex 4 shafts alternatives

Damn.. old thread, but this definately has my answer in it. I had some strange feeling that the Apex 4's were pretty stout for someone as myself with a mid-90's swing speed (driver).

I ended up going for a set of these. Hopefully these will work out. I've been reading various reports that these end up playing "softer" than flex. But others reported they just freq. out differently, than other shafts. So, who knows!

I don't have the DG lite shafts. But I do have the old Brunswick Precision FM 6.5 and 5.5 shafts (IMHO the best ever made. If these weren't on brand new/untouched Golden Ram Tour Grinds (c. 1980), I'd pull them), KBS tours, Apex II (Legend 3), Redline (Apex 4) and 2003 Apex (Apex 4) shafts.

 

All of those Apex shafts have the same step pattern, regardless of the decade. The only difference being the "3s" are longer to the hosel (S v. R). These do not have any similarity to the Brunswick or the KBS shafts at all.

 

The Brunswick and (especially) the KBS have a shorter last step to hosel than do the other shafts or even DG S300.

in terms of feel the Nippon 1150 Tour is close to Apex steel shafts in my opinion.

I have owned probaly 15 different sets of 1984 to 87 Hogan PC's and at least 8 sets of the 88-89 Redlines. I was a young man then. I played the Hogan 4's, 5's, DGX100's, DGX300's and DGS500's.

The DGS500's and the Hogan No 4's had basically the same ball flight with them.

This is with a balata golf ball.

Has anybody run across a set of Royal Precision shafts with a step pattern more like a DG?

I am bumping this old thread as there is some discussion here comparing the Apex shafts to KBS.

I just picked up a set of 88 Redlines with the Apex 4 shaft. I have not hit them yet but am anticipating they will be stiffer than I normally play. My shaft of choice is a soft stepped KBS Tour Stiff. Anyone able to compare these?

I want to avoid reshafting - It just seems wrong to modify a classic and I understand those pinned hosels can be tricky to work with.

I had no illusions they would play the same but all this discussion about the Apex and KBS being similar has me hopeful.

I have played the Apex Redline from 1988 for about 3 years now two as my main clubs. The shaft replacement recommendation is the True Temper Dynalite Gold S300. So maybe if you cannot find any comparison between the KBS and the Apex, maybe you will find one between the Dynalite and the KBS.
Hogan had the first choice of the shafts from True Temper, or so I heard. These are really, really working well for the Redlines. Honestly, if these are in good shape, I would never consider changing them.

I have some hogan apex edge 4 shafts as well. What about soft stepping them once? Anybody tried that? How would that change the flex?

This is so confusing.

I have a couple of rounds in with the Redlines, Apex 4. I just do not see how this could be deemed a "Stiff" shaft. It plays weaker than that - maybe a "Firm". Definitely softer than my KBS Tour, soft stepped. Probably more like the KBS Tour R+ which would be a 5.5 FCM.

The earlier references to the Apex 4 being a really stiff shaft are just downright confusing. Maybe the newer Apex shafts are more stout than the older ones.

No way the apex 4 is as stiff as the kbs stiff. I can tell a difference when i go from my Hogans to my Bstones with kbs.

I've always wanted to put kbs in some Hogans. I just finished building a set of redlines with kbs stiff. Havent had a chance to hit them yet due to the weather. I had to add weight to every head to get them to swingweight to d3. They definitely feel stiffer just practice swinging, but rangetime will be the true test.
