Titleist 905R Black

Fresh paint!!
SoI got bored with my 905R and painted it Black like the 907 Paint scheme. Duplicolor universal black (DS100) Primer and clear coat. 600 grits and paper and 2000 waterproof sandpaper. Turtle wax Rubbing compound and Polishing compound. 3M adhesive remover and tack rags. Duplicolor has a E-learning. http://www.duplicolor.com/training/autospray_training.html on how to paint. Mask your club off and sand with 600grit. Clean the head and use your Tack cloth to pick up the dust. Word of advice, use the black auto primer and not the gray. The gray you can still see once you remove the masking tape. After at least 3-4 coats of clear (because your going to sand off atleast 2 coats) ***Wait 24hrs before sanding***Use soapy water and your 2000 grit to make a smooth finish. The sanding will be rough at first and begin to slide easily. Thats when you got it even. Dry the head and use your rubbing compound to bring back the shine. Finish with polishing compound and then a good wax. try to avoid carnuba wax on the fresh paint. I used mothers cleaner wax then meguires tech Wax. Looks awsome with the Black paint instead of the silver. Cost is about $40 for all the supplies but once you have them you can do many more. Finish it off on the sole plate with Rust-oleum BlackTextured paint (7220 Black)inbetween the scallops for a factory look. Also Acrylic Lacquer requires a min of 48hrs to start to harden. Dont plan on using right away. I painted 5 coats black and 3 clear coats.

Seems like an awful lot of work to get a 905R to look like ....er....a 905R - only darker.

But thanks for the prep tips -

Thats what I was going for. Subtle. You can get carried away with some of the colors they have. They hard a "VooDoo like red" that I almost did.

I have a tour issue 905R that was painted TM black because one of the TM staffers was using it and he did not want it detected from Aerial shots or from Getty's.

No, I will not reveal the name and it has been a few years :)

Nice work!

Good to know if the paint on my 907 chips up for any reason I can just repaint it!

Actually I bought a 585H off the Bay that was pretty scratched up (even though I had asked if it was scratched and was told, no! :fool: ) ... abyway I has our professional spray painter in the workshop at my work paint it up with a nice little cherry red... kind of similar to the Voodoo's maybe???

He has since done a few other clubs for people (among other things - I don't know that he actually does any painting for work!) including a nice Cobra head pattern on a Cobra driver... I should have taken a pic of that one, it was pretty sweet!

Cheers,

Waz

I waited about 3-4min between coats. Dupli-color has a fast flash time. The biggest key is to spray about 4 layers and then wet sand until it feels slick under the sandpaper. Dry the head with a lint free cloth (Got all my supplies at pepBoys). Spray 2 more coats of black and then 2-3 layers of clear. Wait atleast 40hrs for the paint to harden...not dry..harden. Arcylic lacquer has been know to take 7-10days to fully harden. Duplicolor says 48hrs. You will notice a huge difference on how the paint will lay down with little orange peel (paint feels like sandpaper) Then just a little elbow grease with the rubbing compound brings out a deep finish. All this from a spray can. Before you would need a paint gun and compressor.

Yeah because the sole, bore through and titleist triangle wouldn't give it away. But your right from an over head shot from 100 feet away....can't tell the difference. Must have been like Sergio Garcia or Goosen.

How did you go about masking it up? I've refinished quite a few but how good they turn out always depends on my ability, or lack there of, to xacto a strait line. Of course I usually strip all the old paint off and start from scratch which means I can't trace any lines. Since I have 4 905R drivers, I've been making a template from a stock one and then transferring the masking tape to the one I'm working on.

I also dip mine in polyurethane as opposed to spraying with a clear coat. It can be a pain but it gives it a really deep gloss look when it works correctly.

Vinyl eletrical tape for all the curved parts on the back and 2" masking tape for the Face area and the rest of the club. And a New razorblade. If you leave a little stock paint on, its will make a groove for the razor blade to trace against. This is the face on mine.

This was all the items I used to refinish the club. I bought the Driver on Ebay and It was one of those 9 of 10 kinda ratings. When I opened the box and pulled the headcover off I was :censored2: off. Atleast 10chips on the paint and looked like it had rocks or dirt in the club head cover. Pictures were deceiving on eBay. So I buffed the sole and face with a Norton BearTex wavy wheel and buffed it out.

That driver looks awesome!!! I actually called quality golf yesterday to see if they would paint my 905r Taylormade Black. Now i'm thinking I should do it myself. I have a compressor and paint gun. The only thing i'm worried about is masking the head and making the paint breaks look like the factory. I'm not sure I could be as patient as Hondabuff.

while I was polishing out some scratches on my 909 with ScratchX I may have rubbed too hard. There's a small area now that is slightly darker than the factory job surrounding it. I'm pretty sure I may have polished the clear coat off? Any tips? I was thinking of buying a can of spray on clear coat then polishing it to even out the transitions from new to old. It looks like a grease stain.

Man, that looks great! Good job, i like the factory look.. this is a golf club not a DUB car show.. leave the candy paint for that.

Looks very OEM.. If i had that skill, I would do it to remove the graphics from my Burner TP :)

on my 909D2 and 909F2 woods I have several light scratches not on the crown/top but on the sole. I know the clubhead is stainless steel and on the bottom/sole of the woods it is a bright chrome finish. is there any DIY product out there to simply remove all the scuffs/light scratches that naturally occur on the sole of the club? could i use Meguiars Scratch X on the sole to remove these superficial scratches?? any help or tips would be great!

Just wanted to let everyone here know--I followed the instructions on this forum and made a pretty cool looking clubhead with Duplicolor. I documented the process at this blog site:

http://thepowerfade.wordpress.com/2010/11/30/repainting-a-club/#more-404

Trying to get a pic attached. Let's see how this goes. There are a bunch at the blog.008.jpg
