Trackman is the most reliable on the market...but you can get away with using a Zelocity if you take care of it and calibrate it regularly.

Trackman just has fewer "moving parts" when it comes to setting it up.

Flightscope is > than Velocity....it's not even close.

The velocity units I've seen (the crazy robot man looking thing) doesn't even come close to the accuracy of the Trackman. And the Flightscope and Trackman pretty much spit out the same numbers in my experience.

Flightscope is pure radar similar to the Trackman, just doesn't have the cache of name and such cannot command the same price.

To note: If I'm not mistaken Flightscope was the first on the scene and the radar unit first used during PGA tour events to spit out radar based launch numbers.

"Cache" can come from hype, but research groups and industry R&D departments are motivated by results. If the Flightscope was really comparable then 1) the costs between units would be closer and 2) there would be real competition between them for industry acceptance (USGA, OEM companies, etc).

Here's what Tom Wishon recently said about it:

"Recognized in the industry as the most accurate and most investigative launch monitor in the world, TWGT has employed its TrackMan unit since 2005 to support our clubhead design work and assist our ongoing R&D work in clubfitting. No other launch monitor can offer the accuracy and consistency of repeatability for obtaining the precision in data gathering necessary for uncovering the truths about golf club performance. For those in the industry who point to a competing and lower priced Doppler Radar launch monitor currently on the market, the proof of TrackMan’s superior precision can be verified by the fact that it is the only launch monitor used by golf ball designers and manufacturers, where absolute precision in the recording of the ball’s full downrange performance is of paramount importance."

Like I said, from my experience the Flightscope is just as good. I've been on both units quite a bit and they spit out pretty much identical numbers.

To add: I could be wrong, but from what I remember Trackman was giving it's units away to manufactures for free to claim title of "launch monitor used by industry manufactures". So it's not dis-similar to how Taylormade pours in piles of tee it up money to get their drivers in tour players hand to be able to market the "#1 driver in golf".

Just some thoughts.

Like I said, I remember Flightscope was the first and industry standard from the get go. Then Trackman jumped in the fray to take market share. Does Trackman have a great product? You bet. Do I feel Flightscope is an inferior product? Not a chance.

For myself, if it were my cash I'd pick the Flightscope and save myself $25k.

To the best of my knowledge, you are incorrect - Trackman doesn't give their units away to anyone. I remember when Cleveland bought theirs because their tour van operator was telling me I ought to buy one too (I didn't follow his advice at the time, but I should have) and I've heard second hand from reputable sources about the costs from Ping when they bought units for every one of their tech vans. These companies looked at the data and determined that no other launch monitor offered comparable results or repeatability when compared to Trackman.

Not sure if you found this topic: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=69276 but it's probably the most informative one with regard to how the Trackman works and why it's head and shoulders above other units (phased array doppler vs single).

When I was out at Ping's HQ last year they told me a single one of the portable outdoor units we were using on the range (complete with toughbook laptop, etc.) was ~$70K but they got a nice volume discount cause they bought somewhere around 20 of them for all their fitting vans, etc. (as mentioned above)...talk about a serious investment.

If Ping, an engineering company at its roots with some engineers still running the show, use Trackmans then I would be confident it's the most reliable monitor available. After all, it is based off military grade systems designed to track projectiles and missiles over hundreds if not thousands of miles.

I'm not 100% certain but I think the Flightscope also uses a phased type system.

Like I said above, in my experience on both the Flightscope AND Trackman, they are spitting out nearly identical numbers.....so to me the applied technology comparisions must be pretty close.

That being said if I had an unlimited budget and wasn't using my own $$$ I'd probably buy a Trackman just cause....

but when it's my own cash I'd choose the Flightscope.

well, i should have done a little more research on the Flightscope because it does use a phased array doppler radar - not sure if that's the case for their entire lineup but the version comparable to the Trackman I assume does.

I do find it interesting that About Golf (maker of full swing sims) has moved on from a Flightscope based radar system to their own camera based system in 3trak.

anyway, more reading (hbear, you already know about this thread since you've posted in it): http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=139879
