Alright 110+ swing speed is the red always longer, or does the higher spinning black hold it's own? I like the fact that the black is "sticky" off the face around the greens and checks up better than the red, but I know that the red is a freak with driver/woods/irons for me. I just have not had enough head to head with the driver.???????

<TP RED.LDP> IS legal (although I haven't yet seen any in the stores). ;)

I just got 2 dozen from Golf Galaxy which have the sticker on the box and sleeves stating tournament edition

The marking looked like this which IS on the Conforming list

<TP/RED.LDP>·

Well, 2 things.

1) It was NOT on the Conforming List when I looked and the page is now no longer there on the USGA website. When the page is back up you can look again. And be careful as there are many markings that are very similar.

2) I guess Taylor Made themselves don't know what they're talking about either then. http://tmag.com/tpred/

And, FWIW, I've seen the "Tournament Edition" balls on eBay with a couple of different sellers. I asked 2 different sellers whether the balls had the "/". One said his balls DID, the other said they did NOT.

TOTAL distance is dictated by carry and roll.

You OPTIMIZE this by getting your launch angle and spin as close to "perfect" as possible for YOUR swing speed. For a SS of 110 or so I believe your ideal launch would be somewhere around 11-12 degrees and spin rate would be down around 2,500 or so.

So to get the most distance, it depends on whether you're a high launch, high spin player, in which case the RED would help lower launch and spin or whether you're a low launch, low sping player, in which case the BLACK would help get your launch and spin rate up to where it belongs.

Of course, if you're somewhere in the middle you need to get the launch and spin characteristics of both balls and see which one comes closer to the correct numbers for YOU.

Somewhere in the middle describes me perfectly.

With the red, I find that it sometimes lacks spin, both off the driver and into the green. I've had drives just fall out of the sky because they don't have enough spin to carry. And I've watched balls roll off the back of greens.

With the black, I hit moon shots and spun the ball like crazy. Also didn't like the harder feel.

Swingspeed 103 to 108, depending on the day.

Welllllllll, perhaps the TP (either model) is just not for you ?

You said "sometimes". The thing is you need to be looking for the playing characteristics when you hit the ball well. The "sometimes" it falls out of the sky (too little spin no doubt) shouldn't be a big deal if that is the exception rather than the rule.

As for not holding the green I've found that, for ME, the Red hits and sticks, or releases very slightly, exactly the type of ball I want. Now if the green is exceptionally hard or I (slightly ?) blade the ball then it'll skip long.

With the black, I hit moon shots and spun the ball like crazy. Also didn't like the harder feel.

Sounds like a moon shot is your "normal" flight with the Black so I imagine the Black is not the one for you.

You can always try different brands of course. There are plenty to choose from. Good luck.

I think you're right when you suggest that TP is not the brand for me. I was merely making a comment that I was in the in between range that you suggested. Having said that, I can't say that I agree with everything you suggested. While it's important to know what the ball does when you hit it well, I think it's also important to see what happens with mishits. The issue with the red, for me, is that I have to hit it just about perfectly to make it perform well. Otherwise, it doesn't spin enough and heads for the ground in a hurry with the driver, or rolls off the back of the green with the irons. The black launches too high for me and spins too much.

Currently, I'm trying to decide between the Z-Star and the B-330s. Haven't had them both on the same course yet, but for now, I'm struggling to see much of a difference for me. But the one thing I've liked is that they still perform reasonably well when I don't flush them. The Z-Star X was another ball that I had to pure, otherwise really bad things happened. But the whole TP experience is just another example of how there's no one ball out there that fits everybody.

It's the side stamp that matters.

If there's a "/" between TP and RED, i.e. TP/RED they are the NON-conforming ball. If there's a SPACE it is the conforming ball (i.e. TP RED)
