Here is an update. Every chapter is drafted and ready to go through Geoff again except the material on the takeaway, the pivot, the throughswing, and release. The chapter on the transition is now done, as are chapters on swing philosophy and influences, setup, etc. and the chapter on drills and practice. We have to do an overhaul of the short game chapter because getting material together for the book has got Geoff thinking about tons of new stuff, and the chapter on course management and psychology needs some updating (they were drafted first, and Geoff has thought through things and added significant material). We have added a new chapter that covers a lot of new ground and, in my humble opinion, is going to be as important to readers as almost anything else in the book. I don't want to offer too many details about that until the book is done and ready to go.

Once the last few things are done, I am heading down to TXK with the manuscript and we are going to rewrite it so everything there represents Geoff's latest thinking on every aspect of the swing and the game. We are, I suspect, 2-3 months away from that (a month ago I said 6 months, but I've received about 18 DVDs from Geoff that are really well organized and relatively easy to write up, so things are going a bit quicker on my end). Also, that will quicken the whole thing, since there is very little that will need to be revised or reconsidered in that material. In that trip, as I see it, we are also going to be getting the video ready for the webpage, and will be able to get at least some of that organized, at least the stuff that we need to clarify drills and swing instruction chapters. Vid of the shortgame stuff is also absolutely central.

I'm hunkering down here with the goal of being done a draft in 2-3 months: the outside of that frame is the more likely, but hopefully I can get it done ahead of the schedule I had set myself at the beginning of the year.

As always, thanks for the interest,
Rob

I've got Christmas '10 in the pool! Just kidding Rob, but might not others think as I do that this project has taken on a life of it's own. Seems that Geoff's evolving thoughts are now being added and knowing his penchant for getting it right the first time that time may be long off indeed. Glad to hear any news here, thanks for that. It is, or should be, the goal of any instructor to know his subject in all it's complexity and to teach it in it's uttermost simplicity. Will this axiom be reflected in the final draft? Thanks for sharing your experience with us here on GolfWRX. DTS

Hey DTS: Good points to make. Xmas of this year for the published book might not be too far off, depending on how long it takes to find a home.

Regarding the other issue: I suspect the book will be very down to earth and straightforward. Almost all of it is already in Geoff's own words, with me fixing punctuation and organizing a mountain of material that he has had laying around. Also, I am going through with a second set of eyes to see where something requires more sustained attention, etc., and then Geoff goes at it. Sometimes he vetos my word choice, sometimes we find away to say all of what I think a student would need to hear, but we do so as Geoff would do it.

Regarding the life of its own: Yes, I suppose so, but the big issue was the horrible, horrible year Geoff had last year. I won't disclose any details (they aren't really a secret) because he deserves to have his privacy of course, but it was brutal from start to finish. Now the worst appears to be behind him (except for Matt's tragic passing), so he has been able to get me the materials I need to keep the project going. I have all of that except 6 DVDs that will arrive soon, and then I just write and write and write. Since I am a professional writer and university English prof, that tends to go quickly.

Thanks so much to everyone for their response and their patience. This book will, I hope, satisfy its readers, but if it doesn't, it won't be for a lack of effort or patience on Geoff's part or mine.

Best,
Rob

My workload is actually not that bad, and I certainly didn't mean to trumpet my own horn (sorry if it came across that way-- I only wanted to suggest that I have some experience as a writer and get through the stuff at a good pace). If I was really that busy I wouldn't be in the lefty BST about 10 times a day.

The DVDs capture Geoff's voice as he is going over swing vids on his computer (with V1 software). You see the video captured on the DVD, mostly video that Geoff has drawn lines or images on to show what is important in the swing, and then he is talking over them to explain in detail what is going on in a swing, or a part of the swing, or setup, etc. If you check out the youtube vids you will see a bit of that, but these are those kinds of things on steroids, and with unbelievable detail and sequence, and with more of Geoff's explanation. On others, he or someone else is hitting short game shots and walking the viewer through the whole thing. They aren't really for public consumption as is, but down the road I see possibilities.

Don't be shy to ask for updates whenever you want them. Next week is reading week at my university, and, happily, I have cleared my desk and inbox of everything that needed to be done (mostly a big stack of essays that needed grading), so I am just writing the book, from 8-5 for days on end. I will get through a lot of stuff next week, I suspect: all the swing instruction at least, and then back to revising some earlier stuff. We are certainly gaining on it now guys.

I don't want to say anything about the website because that isn't really my end of the project. I'm sure as soon as things are up and going there either Geoff or I (or both) will buy a sponsor's membership in this site and announce the other here.
