Let me tell you about my day at Oakmont !!!!

 

I stayed at a Marriott nearby and when I went to sleep around 11pm there were big thunderstorms rumbling through and they lasted all night which made for a sleepless night .......... got about 3 hours of sleep.

I woke up at 6 am and looked outside and it was still raining and thought crap I might get washed out. Well I got dressed and around 6:45 I went out to my car and the rain stopped and the sun was starting to peek out. I arrived at Oakmont around 7am to be greeted at the club drop. They took my clubs and valet my car. I left my phone in the car as instructed and walked into the clubhouse and to the men's lockerroom. The attendent took my shoebag and showed me to my locker. I got dressed and the attendent brought my shoes back shined and with brand new spikes in them. I tipped him and then went out to the range. It was 7;15 and I was the first person there. The sun was just behind wisps of fog and I tell you it looked like a postcard !!!

 

Now my round was set up by my coach from the Jim McClean golf center in Dallas. The gentleman was a board member at Oakmont and was a student of my teacher. He arrived around 7:30 at the range for our 8am tee time. We hit a few balls then he suggested that we go spend some time on the practice green. As some of you know the practice green is attached to the 9th green. I started with some straight 5 foot putts and my first put I hit missed on the left and went 25 feet past !!!! I barely touched that one !!! Man were these greens FAST !!!!!! We headed to the first tee where I met my caddie Smitty. He is one of the most experienced caddies there at Oakmont and he was GREAT !!!

 

8am and ready to go !!!

 

1st hole 482 yards straight away with a blind tee shot to a narrow fairway. I hit my tee shot down the left side and it stayed in the fairway leaving me 195 yards down to a green below us with a green that slopes away !!! Smitty suggested a 6 iron to land it on the front of the green as the flag was on the back. I hit it and it landed 5 yards short and trickled onto the green and ran 40 feet down to about 12 feet from the pin. Two putts for a par !!! I said to myself "Not so bad" .......... boy was I going to learn how really TOUGH these greens and the course is !!!!

 

Well I will not bore you with every hole but here is some of my highlights and lowlights .............. LOL

 

 

Hole # 3 428 yds ........ This is the hole with the churchpews and of course I hit into the pews and was stuck up against a pew and had to chip out sideways and ended up with a double.

 

Hole # 6 ......... 194 yds ....... downhill Par 3 ......... Smitty suggested a 5 iron and land it about 10 yards to the right of the pin. I hit a pure 5 iron and it landed about 15 yards right of the pin and it funneled to about 8 feet. Birdie.

 

Hole # 8 ......... 245 yds ............ Hit a 5 wood to the front edge of the green ........... four putted for a double !!! Crazy fast green !!!

 

Hole # 12 ........ 632 yds ........... Driver, 5 wood, 9 iron to about 10 feet .......... lipped out for a par !

 

Hole # 15 ........ 499 yds .......... Driver into the small Church pews on the left and took a triple !!

 

Hole # 17 ........ 296 yds ......... Hole playing downwind and took a driver and drove my ball to the front edge of the green and two putted for a birdie !!!

 

Hole # 18 ......... 412 yds ........... Driver, 6 iron to about 20 feet and left it inches short for a par !!!

 

I finished with a 86 and felt good with my score ............ My host shot a 80.

 

We had a great lunch on the porch and then he gave me a tour of the clubhouse and man was that cool !!!

There is a lot of history in this club.

 

What a dream day I had and I want to thank my host from the bottom of my heart !!!

 

I am playing with him again later this year.

I wonder if I can find some way to play it. Im going to be volunteering at the LPGA us open next year at Oakmont maybe I can make some connections and get a round.

If you're going to volunteer, you might want to know you'll being doing so for the USGA not the LPGA. Not trying to be a D^&% or anything, but just so you can talk intelligently about it.

I know its for the USGA but it is at the Ladies US Open. If all goes well I'll probably try to do the Men's US Open when it comes back in 2016
