What's your "safe shot"?

If the hole is long one a low drawing driver is my 'safe shot'. If the hole is relatively short then a three wood is always a great, no risk option.

If I still need the distance but need to keep it in the fairway I hit a "bunt driver". I choke down an inch on my driver, tee the ball a little bit lower than normal and use a dead arms, no hands shot...almost like a punch shot that stays low but still goes about 250. Taking your hands out of the shot helps with the nerves and teeing it a little bit lower and driving through it like a punch shot ensures you make solid contact.

It's also a great shot into the wind.

Some people will hit a fairway wood but when the pressure is on I don't want to have to make a full swing with anything....and I can hit one heck of a hook with my 4 wood, especially under pressure! :)

i hit it dead straight. if there is room i hit driver because driving is one of my strengths. or if it is a shorter hole i hit a 2 iron. if i try to play a draw or fade then i make my swing to complicated which is exactly what i wasn't trying to do. keep things simple by aiming down the middle, hit it straight and TRUST your swing.

When the pressure is on I always hit my driver banana slice. It never fails, when I think about what i'm doing, I choke. LOL

Not lately though as I have figured out how to play somewhat correctly, the first hole is the V-steel 5 wood straight down the middle, I can swing as hard as I want, that club is money.

i'm very unusual about this one. if i'm under pressure, i take the distance of a par 4, divide it into 2, or into 3 for a par 5. so a 510 yard yar 5, divided by three is 170 yards. that's 3 8 irons for me. So Instead I will hit 7 off the tee, 8 off the fairway, and 9 into the green! Easy Fairways...and I trust to put myself close with a 9! The little bitty 9 hole course I'm playing tomorrow with some buddies (a little scramble we wager on) doesn't have a par 4 longer than 360 (divided by 2, is a 7 iron)...so I'm only taking my 7-PW, my three wedges, and my putter. I'm TRYING to make things more simple...rather than driving all the par 4 greens.

Agreed, the straight shot is ideal, but everybody has a shot that is more comfortable to do that hitting it straight (unless hitting it straight is the most comfortable). I would take my 3 wood and hit my normal cut down the mid-right side of the fairway. It is my absolute favorite hsot because i always pure it.

1) First choice safe shot -- easy swing (basically let the club drop and bring itself through) with driver, aimed at the left edge of the fairway. I either end up on the left edge or fade/cut to the middle if I miss it a little. Of course, if I'm missing it a lot that day, no easy swing or aiming left can save me. Which brings me to my next option.

2) Bail-out shot if my nerves won't even let me pull driver or 3 wood -- Nike CPR 18* iron-wood (2-iron equivalent), same type of swing described above. If a fairway must be hit at all costs, this is what I do, distance be damned.

3 iron, or a 3/4 swing driver.

Driver......and depending on the shot required, one of two "types" of driver shots......

- Gotta' be accurate with maximum distance.....HARD "knuckle fade"....

- Pure accuracy......"chip driver"......"9 O'clock driver".........goes as far as a 3 wood with a SLIGHT fade normally.....

IMOP the driver is BY FAR the most important club in the bag in order to play "high level" competitive golf......drive the ball effectively and the PLAYER can decide when to play "aggressively" or "conservatively"......drive it crummy and the player is ALWAYS on the "defensive" and the COURSE decides how you play.......a great driver of the ball will rarely struggle to post a decent round as their constantly "in position to score"......depend on putting and you'll be the streakiest SOB on the planet......:stop:

Slicefixer you always have good input in your threads... I bet you are a great instructor. I have my share of swing faults and you're right about being defensive on the course with crummy drives

Option 1: Driver. I am pretty confident with the big stick, so instead of going at it fairly hard, I'd just take an easy full length swing with my driver (takes off a few yards, but many more times than not it will find the fairway).

Option 2: Three-Wood. I am not the one to leave the big stick in the bag when I have an opertunity to hit it, so unless I feel like it would do more trouble hitting driver off the tee - I will pull the three wood and unleash.

My safe shot when the pressure is on or if I have to find the fairway or even if I am trying to place a shot perfectly to set up a good angle for an approach. It used to be for me a high cut 3 iron but now I hit a stinger 3 wood (much like Tiger hits now) that I start on the right side and draws back into the fairway. 95 out of 100 times I can hit it exactly where I want it and I will have an easy approach for my second.

2iron. This club couldn't find trouble w/ a map. I can';t remember it going OB or unplayable.

It has no problem keeping up w/ most ppl's 3 woods, and I've been known to outdrive alot of ppl with it.

It's super responsive too, so regardless of the shape needed, it can be done...also cuts through wind better than any other club i have

Also, it's the perfect club from the back tees on all 3 of my course's 9's 1st holes.. so it's ideal for pressure (i.e. the championship)
