good cheap driver

i'm talkin cheap!
I've been throwing the idea around of cutting down my current driver a few inches, but first I want to grab a driver for cheap and try it out. So what I'm lookin for is something cheap I can try it on first, I've been searching ebay up and down, I definately want to spend under $100 and under $75 would be even better. I've been looking at ft-3 tours, and some of the older cleveland hibore series. I'd really like to land one with a ys-6 shaft in it....and ideas on a good cheap driver that I won't get laughed off the course for using!

I'm in the same boat. Just looking for a driver to play around with. Cobra Speed Pro X can be had for around $100. Some people don't like the Titleist 907 D1 and D2s, but they can be had for chep and are still good clubs. Possibly even Bridgestones j33 or even some older drivers like 983k, mizuno mp-001, taylormade r7s. There are a lot of good options that are only a few years old.

Titleist used YS6 as one of their stock shafts. Should be able to find the 905R with one and even cheaper, the 983K with one. TBH the 983K is a very solid stick. A YS shaft will be cheap anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if you were to post a WTB ad if someone wouldn't have one for a little more than the shipping cost.

Check used racks of local shops as well. Last year I picked up a QuadTP with a Speeder for $74 and a Cobra SpeedPro with the VS Proto for $75, both in about 8.5-9 condition.
I would just cut down my sumo I have, but I really don't want to chop 2" off that speeder I have in there. I used to bomb that thing and I think I'm just going through a driver slump, so I'm gonna try a shorter stick for awhile....
You can always have it extended if you cut some of it off. But remember that shorter drivers are never a bad thing. While one inch of shaft equals about 2 more yards, it also equals about a 10% wider dispersion pattern.

I got a couple of drivers I'm watchin on the bay...so we'll see how things pan out. I keep lookin around local golf shops for a gem in the used bin, but golf discount wants an arm and a leg for their used stuff. I really put too much analysis into these kinds of things, I have to have things just right, like I HAVE to have a certain shaft, and what not...but I guess that's why I'm a member of this forum! Thanks for the suggestions, keep em comin if there are anymore.

I would have said Nike SUMO 4950 or 5000 instantly, but you're already playing that. So here are my thoughts:

Hi-Bore XL
905R
R7 425 (if you can get it cheap enough)

If you were able to spring just a few extra bucks over your limit, you can get a nice Titleist 907 D2 with a YS-6 in it already.

3-Wood: Ping G30
Hybrid: Adams Idea Pro
Irons: Mizuno JPX921 Hot Metal Pro
Wedges: Scratch 1018

Great club - you can't go wrong with that club if the loft (9.5) is right for you.

TM R5, really good quality head and shaft, similar to the R7 without moveable weights, I bought one brand new a year ago for $100 but didnt really like the shaft, too tip stiff for me. Sold it to my buddy for $50 and he is KILLING it. There is tons of TM stuff floating around used that you can pick up cheap, it does not hold it's value well at all since they have so many new products coming out so often.

Ping G400 Testing G410.  10.5 set at small -
Ping G410 3, 5 and 7 wood

Ping G410 5 hybrid-not much use.
Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal. 5-G
Vokey 54.10, 2009 58.12 M, Testing TM MG2 60* TW grind and MG3 56* TW grind.  Or Ping Glide Stealth, 54,58 SS.
Odyssey Pro #1 black

I am not sure why u want to do this. I guess for accuracy. If u shorten the shaft on your driver then all u have is a lower lofted 3 wood. If u have to do this, I would buy a SMT driver head and put a 3 wood shaft in it (length and flex). Why SMT, well they make great heads and u can find them fairly cheep used on ebay. If you take a driver and just cut it down you change the flex of the shaft (stiffer). Hope this helps.
