Anyone here from Alabama

Recommended Posts

Well, like the title says i would like to find some regular playing partner(s) around me. There are a couple guys at work that play but it often turns into more of a drinking fest than a golf outing.....i enjoy the game and like to make a conscious effort to "Play" when i go.

I'm in Dothan, AL and there is a Robert Trent Jones course that is quite nice and i play at a few local country clubs once in a while.

anyone in the area or coming through the area let me know. I can suck it up while someone else actually plays......lol

Jess, have you played at Lagoon in Montgomery?
[/quote]

I have but it's been awhile, probably 5 years. The city of Montgomery still was managing the course when I played it; now they've turned it over to SunBelt or some other private entity.

It's a very good muni. It used to be on one of Golf Digest's best-places-you-can-play-lists. The fairways were always very soft and very well-maintained. The last time I was out there, the greens had a lot of heat damage but we're talking about 5 years here.

The only thing I don't like about that course is, with all the water there is around it, they made use of very little of it in the layout. It's only in play 2-3 times a round.

But for the price, you can't beat it. Another good public course around there, provided they keep putting money in it, is Emerald Mountain in Wetumpka.

I was just wondering if you'd played it recently. It's been about that while since I've been out there. Used to be really nice, easier to play with friends at than at MCC. After July you've gotta have guests play during the week, and with school that doesn't work too well.. just wondered what condition the course was in. I knew the city had turned over management.

haven't played emerald mountain, but i want to play it.

moonshine have you played it recently? like i said just trying to figure out a place for me and my friends to play some weekends when we can't go play at mcc or my friends can't afford it.

I hear lagoon is in great shape now that a new management company is running things...Honors Golf I believe. I would shy away from Emerald Mountain, just not good for $40 or whatever it costs.....and to me, some of the holes are very weird.

Emerald Mountain is $40 now? It was $25 to ride 18 the last time I was there. That's great value, $40 not so much.

I like their layout a lot. I'd put it up there with a RTJ course -- IF they would keep the grass green and the weeds out. They've had so much bad luck with drainage and changes in ownership that they've always been fighting uphill.

Do any of you guys have an interest in doing some traveling golf in Alabama? Maybe playing a different RTJ course every month or some other course?

There is a really nice semi-private course in the columbus area....let me look for it and I will get back to you. Another one is auburn links, was a hooters tour course for a while.

Bull Creek is the name of the one in Columbus I have heard good stuff about.

I heard Ballentrae is very nice, but probably hour or so from Auburn.

Bull Creek is far from "nice". There are many others in Auburn/Columbus that I'd recommend first.

Maple Ridge in Columbus is open to public now I believe...always was nicer than Bull Creek when I was in that area.

And Callaway Gardens had a deal where you coils stay in the cottages and play golf for $99/day/night.

Can any of you guys recommend places in or around the Opelika/Auburn and Columbus, GA area? I've got 4 guys coming down in a few weeks to use rain checks for 36 at Grand National and we were hoping to pick up 18 the next day at somewhere else in the area. Thanks in advance.
