They have like a satin face (where the grooves are) and on the toe and heel it's chrome.

that makes it tougher... you want to remove the big marks but not make the whole toe dull... get some polish for sure.

I would try the polish first..something fine like scratch remover ..automotive stuff. The deeper scratchs will probably never totally go away. Sandy range balls and one loose swing is all it takes.

I have had that experience and Johnny is right about sandy range balls doing that. Those scratches are abrasions from silicate particles. I was able to get good results with this particular technique:

1. tape up the portion of the face where the score lines are. which is where the satin finish meets the chrome part.

2. Get some 600 or 1000 grit sand paper. Wet the sandpaper slightly and sand down the area in a single direction evenly. Be careful not to sand the satin finish area.

3. Do this gently because you dont want to wear out the chrome. 1000 grit paper will take longer to work but has a finer finish to it. This will remove the random scratches from the surface and even up the surface.

4. Wet the surface regularly so as to slow down the abrasion caused by the sand paper.

5 When you have completely sanded the area, use a metal polish paste

6. Blue Magic worked very well ( available at your nearest hardware)

7. Polish in a swirling manner to diffuse the directionality of your sanding process. Take your sweet time doing this until the cloth is black

8. Buff to a shine.

Hope this helps

The buffing wheel will take it off in seconds with some compound.

But I will have to mention, since you have given me a chance, that you guys are waaaay to anal about your clubs. These things are for beating on.

I would reccomend going out and hitting balls until the clubs have no finish left on them, and then see how you feel.

They're irons, and they're built to dig in the dirt.

I don't know how some guys hit out of fairway bunkers and sand traps. Practice out of one of those and see what happens to your pristine irons.

Actually, I really am not anal about my clubs. Even the occasional rock chip at the sole or bottom of the face does not really bother me. The only reason I am aware of this method of cleaning up a face was because I sold a previous set I have and wanted it to look as good as possible for the buyer who was a friend. In my mind, these clubs are only implements to a larger objective which is to get that ball into the hole. Polishing my technique though is something I wouldn't mind being more anal about. Unfortunately, even this doesn't really seem as big a priority as having a great time out on the course.

Try an extra fine sanding sponge. You can get one at any hardware (Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.) store.

I've used this process for years on my irons and wedges (both chrome or satin finished clubs) and it works really well. I'm anal about my clubs but golf is part mental, right?

Hope this helps.

"Golf is assuredly a mystifying game. It would seem that if a person has hit a golf ball correctly a thousand times, he should be able to duplicate the performance at will. But such is certainly not the case." - Bobby Jones
