Carry Bag Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

need some assistance
So after a few years of lugging my staff bag around on a Sun Mountain speed cart, I think I might try carrying my clubs again. The current course that I'm a member at is a little more carry-friendly than cart friendly.

So, because I haven't owned a carry bag in quite some time, I need some help from the WRX'ers. I don't want something crazy heavy, but I'd like something with some form of club management system.

There are a few that have caught my eye:

-Mizuno Aerolite III
-Cobra Sport Stand
-Cobra GT Stand

I've also had good experience with Ogio bags in the past, and I'm also open to Sun Mountain, Callaway & Titleist. I can't say I'm really impressed with Ping's bags as of late, so I don't know if I'd even consider them.

Sun mountain 3.5 and 4.5 are the best lightweight bags with management systems I have seen. I have the Ogio Ozone, and it's a little heavier, but has a LOT more features. The ogio seems to have everything in the right spot, from a drink carrier, to scorcard pouch. To me it's well worth the extra pound. Good Luck!!

The Ozone looks like a great bag. One thing that is disappointing me with Ogio's current lineup is their colour offerings. Ogio has always been pretty good at offering a pretty good range of unique colorways in the past, but this year's colours are pretty boring & bland.

Oh, and while I'm at it - anyone have any feedback on this new Zero G bag from Sun Mountain?

When I carry, I only carry 12 at most in a Sun Mountain Swift or a Titleist Sunday bag. 14 clubs are doable, but be prepared to wrestle with tangled grips from time to time. The Swift has a stand, which is nice for wet mornings.

I sometimes only carry a half set of irons as well and I really don't score any worse overall. This also might be an option, if it works for you.

What's in the Swift X?

I have a Cobra GT Stand bag.

I switched from a PING Hoofer to the GT stand bag.

It is a great looking bag with lots of pockets but I don't care for the strap system or the extended mechanism on the bottom of Cobra & Titleist that ejects the legs. They cause the bag not to fit in most golf carts without having to turn and manipulate the bag in there.

If you are going to walk a lot I would suggest a PING Hoofer over the GT bag based on my experience.

Agreed.

I don't think I'd carry anything other than a Four 5 (or Titleist 14-way) or Titleist Lightweight bag.

I carried Hoofers in high school and college, but they're just not the same anymore.

Definitely starting to lean strongly towards Ogio. Now that I think of it I'm kicking myself for getting rid of the Grom that I used to have a few years ago.

Thinking that the Ozone or the Decibel would be the two that I'd be interested in, as I remember the Grom being somewhat heavy.

Anyone know the weights of the Grom, Ozone and Decibel? They're not listed on Ogio's site.

Wow. The Grom is lighter than the Ozone? I never would have thought that.

I absolutely agree. My Four 5 is the best carry bag I've ever used. One thing to consider is you have to put it sideways in a cart if you do use it in a cart. A small price to pay in my opinion for a great carry bag!

I have a four5, and it's the first bag I've owned with 14 dividers. I don't particularly care for it, because if you shove a jacket in the main pocket and it's bulgy, or if you strap it onto the cart to tight, the clubs will jam. It IS light (hence the 4.5 moniker; 4.5 lbs), and the pockets are great, but it doesn't have an insulated beverage liner, which I miss. One thing I like about it is the handle at the top of the bag. Once you get used to having it, you'll NEVER want another bag without it.

On a side note, I did return my Cobra GT bag for this SM 4.5. The GT just felt REALLY bulky due to all that padding and the shape, and because of that, I just felt like it was heavier.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd buy one of those newer Taylor Made bags...the ones with the 6 openings and the handle on the top of the bag. I've seen them at Dick's for around $150, so that should be a pretty good deal.

Well, after about 30 minutes of humming & hawing around the Golf Town bag department, I decided to pick up an '09 Ogio Ozone because it was a great price.

OGIO%20Ozone%20Stand%20Bag-sw2.jpg

It really boiled down to the Grom & the Ozone. If for some reason I absolutely hate this bag I'll take it back & upgrade to the 2010 Grom.

This one felt the most comfortable on my shoulders. The 2010 Ozone has some new crossbow system that just felt horribly uncomfortable on my back & shoulders, and that was without anything in the bag. I can only imagine how bad it would have felt with some weight in it.

The one feature that the Ozone is missing, which imo is one of the best golf bag innovations, is the Torq strap. But, I'm sure I can survive without it, as I don't ride that often.

I did take a look at the Mizuno Aerolite III, but the bag just felt way too flimsy for my liking. I felt roughly the same way about the Cobra GT.

I don't know if I care for the woodie divider system in my Ogio Ozone bag. I just received it from Gppgolf.com It's the 2010 Prizmata with the footpads. Might have to get something else. If anyone's interested.........PM me.

Another vote for SunMountain Four 5

Nothing compares to the Four 5 as a pure carry bag as it has a 10.5 top and 14 dividiers...it has all the pockets one would need (if you need more then it offers you may be carrying too much stuff :D )...I also agree that the Hoofer bag is not what it use to be. Back it the day it was probably the best carry bag but I think PING needs to evaluate the Hoofer and get up-to-date with this bag and their bag design...I think the Hoofer sells mainly becuase of its history and name but there are way better carry bags today on the market...I am a huge PING fan but I hate their bags...Good luck with whatever you decide...
