Atlanta Golf

Hello,

Can anyone from the Atlanta area give me a 15-second overview of Atlanta golf? Specifically, what are the top-5 public courses, and top-5 private courses? I may be moving to Atlanta and I'd like an idea of how golf there will compare to the excellent golf up here in Michigan. I'm also considering joining a private club, and it would be nice to know what clubs I should focus my research on, especially if they offer a championship style course, and tennis and aquatic programs.

Thank You.

Do you have existing social and business connections in the Atlanta area? That will, to a large extent, determine feasibility on joining the "top 5" private courses.

Private in Atlanta and just barely outside Atlanta:

East Lake (Good Luck getting in)
Braelinn
Piedmont Driving Club
Cherokee Town and CC(North Course)
Eagles Landing
Whitewater Creek

Public:
Sugar Creek
Bobby Jones GC
Crystal Lake Golf and CC
Durham Lakes
Cotton Fields
Bear's Best

My opinions from courses I've played at anyway. The private ones I've had the fortune of playing above were through connections from when I worked down that way except for East Lake, that was through my cousin's FIL working for a guy that's on the board there.

Living in Atlanta my whole life I can actually answer this one.

Privat/Semi Private:
East Lake
Piedmont Driving Club
Ansley /Setting down
Trophy Club Atlanta
Peachtree Club
Cherokee
Capital City
I can go on for days.

Public:
North Fulton Golf Course
Bobby Jones (my home course)
Brown's Mill
Tupp Holmes
Marietta CC

If you are looking for public courses just look on americangolf.com or on canongategolf.com. There is alot of great golf in metro atlanta.

To the private list I would add the River Club, Atlanta Athletic Club, and The Manor. To the public list Chicopee Woods and St. Ives.

St. Ives is private and I played chicopee woods a few weeks ago and their greens are pretty bad.

As others have mentioned, there's a ton of great golf courses in Atlanta. Of course "in Atlanta" means different things to different people and the "metro area" is pretty big. Are you looking Intown? Midtown? Northeast? Northwest? Southside?
Because of the economy, this is probably the greatest time to join a private club in Atlanta ever.

Private courses mainly on the northside (other than those already mentioned include) - and that you have a hope in hell of joining include:

Golf Club of Georgia (NE)
Marietta Country Club (NW)
Berkeley Hills (NE)
Atlanta National (NW)
White Columns (NW)
Atlanta Athletic Club (NE)
Hawks Ridge (NE)

Plus any number of semi-private or public courses (visit "Last Minute Atlanta Golfer" for lots of daily fee options.)

You're right. I meant St. Marlo. I always get those 2 confused.

Haven't played Chicopee in a while, but their greens have been good when I have. Being a county run course their maintenance budget may have been cut back.

Since I'm a Michigan native but have lived in Atlanta since 1982, perhaps I can comment. The first thing you will notice is that you can play here year round. The second thing is that all the fairways and rough are bermuda, and probably 80% of the greens are bermuda. This will take some adjustment. The third is that Atlanta is a big city with bad traffic. So it is pretty much hopeless to be looking for advice on clubs, until you determine approx. where you are going to live. Maybe the last thing is, I would bet you will find prices for golf higher here than in Michigan, although generally speaking, the cost of living is not bad. Golf gets noticeably less expensive as you move away from Atlanta more into the suburbs and beyond.

Where do you currently live in Michigan? That will be of value in comparing course quality and costs
