Has this every happened to you?

On the first tee this morning, I hooked my tee shot that ended up between the first and ninth fairways. As I was waiting for my playing partners to hit their drives, I noticed another golfer walking up the ninth fairway and then made a sharp left turn, he bent over and appeared to pick something up right in the vicinity of where my tee shot finished. I started walking down the left side of the first fairway, toward this golfer. As I got close I asked if he had seen my ball - "It's a Pro V1 #1 marked with a line and two blue dots". (I couldn't have been more specific.) He says "No, I haven't seen it." Somehow I knew he was lying to me. I just stopped and watched him continue walking to the ninth green. I continued to watch him and at this point he was about 100 yards away from me. He must has sensed that I was still watching him. He turns around and says, "I've got your ball." No sorry, no apology - nothing. He takes out a club and hits it to me. I just shook my head. I was speechless. I took a drop as best as I could determine where he picked it up. The action by this jerk did make me mad, but fortunately I settled down after dumping my approach shot into the green side bunker. I got it up and down and when on to shoot a very good round - at least for me (71). But the best lesson I learned today was to re-focus quickly and get back to getting the ball in the hole with the fewest strokes.

this stuff happens all the time. One time i was playing behind a twosome, and on the 10th hole i stepped to the tee and saw no one (i had waited a bit at the turn to get a drink etc so it was reasonable they had finished the 10th hole). I hit my drive and it landed in the fairway. About 15 seconds later the twosome walks out of the woods and one of the guys picks up my ball and walks toward the green....i drove up to the fairway and couldn't find my ball (obviously suspecting the guy had picked it up). Then i drove up to the green and asked the guy if he had taken it...he said no, i asked him again and again he said no....finally i said "look man i know you took it, i saw you take it" and he then took it out of his pocket, told me to "go F myself" and then threw it in the greenside pond.

his playing partner pulled a ball out of his own bag and gave it to me and apologized for his friend...which was classy of him, at least

Yes, it has happened to me also, several times. It is one of the reasons I no longer play muni.

Wow, that's pretty unbelieveable. You have better restraint than I do.

I play a very tight course and the holes are all close together. Most members know to never pick up a ball unless there is definitely no one around and it's very obvious that it's a lost ball. Personally, I just don't pick up any balls other than occasionally out of a hazard.

Happened to me in a club competition, I was 3 under going down 17, hit my ball into a green side bunker another lad came over and played it, I approached him and said did you play my ball pro v x number 1 green dot both sides and black line, this was when i was standing beside him with the ball on his fairway and it was clearly mine, he kept saying know so i was stuck and had to take a penalty so back i went and resulted in a double bogey, I lost the competition by 1 shot
Easy to say I was not impressed with it at all,

I very well may have taken his entire golf bag off of his cart and thrown it in there with my ball, and I'm not really sure there could have been a whole lot he would have done about it.

If the ball was clearly yours (you could see the markings, correct?), I'm not so sure you had to take a penalty. You'd drop a ball into the bunker under rule 18-1. Decision 18-1/5 covers the situation where the original location of a stolen ball is uncertain.

i was really mad, but his friend made nice right away so i mean it pretty much ended it for me right there. I would've loved to pop him, but it's not worth it. At the time i was 26 and about 210lbs, fresh off playing semi pro football, and was basically an adonis-like beacon of physical fitness. Plus the guy was in his late 40's-50's. If i'd beaten up a guy twice my age in public i'd probably be in jail now instead of sharing these great stories with you fine gents

I never said I would have beat him up, I simply would have thrown his bag in the water with my ball.
