I have alternated Thanksgiving and Christmas for the last 15 years in the Jacksonville, NC area and have never not been able to play golf. Jacksonville is a bit more coastal, but I would bet the weather will be great. I am going to be at Pine Needles in two weeks. I booked my whole trip through them and the staff there could not have been better. They have very limited pull with the Pinehurst resort courses, but they can arrange play just about anywhere else. The only way to get advanced tee times at the Pinehurst resort courses is to stay at the resort, or have a connection with a member. Also when I looked into the Pinehurst resort, the lower level packages only gave you the chance to book tee times 30 days out.<br clear="all">

Thanks Tie, not looking to play more than 18 in a day. Temps cool in the morning? Jacket normally needed?
November temps are usually not cold at all..... I usually do not start hunting here until december because its still too hot in Nov and the bugs are still out.

At the worst, you may need a sweater in morning, but I would not be surprised in Nov if you don't need anything at all, and you still golf in shorts.

Nov in my opinion is one of the best months for golf in the Pinehurst area......courses all should be in great condition, greens should be rolling fast..... I know Pine Needles will be fantastic.....there greens are always good and roll fast even in July.....so Nov you should be getting tournament type greens.

You should have a great trip. If you need a extra on any of your rounds, let me know.

Thanks for the input guys, it is greatly appreciated.

I think we are going to do 3 rounds of golf.

Two at Pinehurst and one at Pine Needles. What two courses at Pinehurst? #2 and ?
Without question, if your doing Resort courses and No.2 is one of them......definitely play No. 4

In my opinion, 4 is the best course of all of them.

You will not be disappointed playing Pine Needles either, that is a fantastic course and conditions and greens might/probably will be the best of the courses you are playing, and that says alot.

Anyone play Dormie Club? Any opinions?

Here's a link to a thread discussing the Dormie Club with some good photos:

It looks like I have to change the dates of the trip to the end of October. Rates at Pinehurst are a bit higher in October than November.

Does anyone have any tips or connections to get on the Pinehurst courses without staying there? I have read that people get on as walk ons every once in a while.

Thanks

I think you can actually play there without staying, but the rates are higher.

There are also packages available by most of the area resorts that offer stay and play packages. Talamore, Tobacco Road, offer packages that I believe have resort courses available. Little River may also have such packages.

Thank you everyone for the help. Any must eat or things to do in town when your not on the course?
The Pine Crest Inn in the Village of Pinehurst is a long time tradition for golfers...... The Village itself has some nice restaurants.

If you leave Pine Needles, you won't be too far from US 1 which you have many options.... you could go to the LobSteer Restaurant, it is known for its salad bar, or you could continue into Aberdeen, which has many of your franchised type restaurants.....

Pine Needles is an amazing resort with a golf course that is as good as any in the whole area. It is everything you want in a Donald Ross course and is truly one of the greatest places I have ever been.

Dormie Club was a very, very good golf course. If you can work it into your schedule, you should play. The fairways are huge and run like crazy. The greens are wild and just fun to putt.

No matter where you go, you will have a good time.

Give Greg Austin a call at AME Golf. He is a local boy with lots of good connections in town. He can get you on the resort courses without having to stay on the property.

Hello,

I have a similar dilemma. I'm stationed at Fort Bragg and I graduate the Special Forces Qualification Course on November 9. My whole family is coming down from NY and my Dad were looking to play Pinehurst #2 once I finished this thing. I go out to the last phase in about a week to Robin Sage and I was hoping to make a tee time for November 10 but it looks like you need to actually stay there as I look online. Do you think that Greg could help or do any of you know anyone else that could help me. I live in Fayetteville, NC right now outside Fort Bragg but I move to a different part of country once I graduate in early November. Thank you so much.

I am a local with guest priveldges at Pinehurst. I would be happy to have you and your father join me on #2. I won't bore you with the details but I am willing to look into arranging a tee time. As a community we enjoy helping out our military friends. Let me know if I can help.

Mr. Ross,

I just sent you message and that would be absolutely amazing. I inserted my email and phone number as well. I leave for the last Phase on Sunday morning at 530 for about 4 weeks. I have to say, you made my day.

Very Respectfully,

Shane O.

Has anyone played in the Pinehurst area in the last few days? What shape are the courses in?
It was a tough summer for bent grass greens. For the most part the fall weather has allowed the greens to recover.

The summer was wonderful for bermuda fairways. Most of the courses are in the middle of winter overseeding right now. But the bermuda has not yet gone dormant, so fairways are typically playing very well right now. However, overseeding season often means very heavy watering, so fairways tend to be relatively soft.

Played Dormie Club and Forest Creek North and South last week - all in amazing shape. Dormie Club is now on my must-play list for a return visit. Exceptional course.

Played Dormie today. It is awesome. An absolute riot to play. The greens are perfect. No matter how long the hole you still have a chance. Anyone who has the chance to play here MUST.
I just got back from the Pinehurst area, played 4 rounds in 3 days: Dormie Club, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Tobacco Road.

Dormie Club is AWESOME, every hole is different from the other holes, and the greens are perfect. They are not going to overseed there, so the fairways still play firm and fast. I'm not a big hitter (250-260 off the tee on good shots), and I was able to get to the 2 longest par 4s without a big problem on a day where conditions weren't all that great (temperature in the high 40s, rain off and on). They are going to be public through the end of 2012, although most people around there also don't expect them to actually be able to go private after that. If I make it back to the Carolinas soon, I will do everything possible to go play there again, I had that much fun.

Mid Pines was the easiest course of the bunch, even though my score didn't reflect it. Greens weren't as good as all of the other places we played. Pine Needles had just overseeded their fairways, so we could only take the carts in the rough and pinestraw. The fairways were pretty soft because of the overseed, but the greens rolled pretty true. The greens at Tobacco Road were in really good shape, just slightly below the condition of the greens at Dormie. However, the greens at Dormie were lightning-quick, the greens at Tobacco Road were a little slower which made them much easier to putt on.

My choices (given the No. 2 exclusion) would be in order ....

1) No. 8

2) No. 4

3) No. 6 or No. 7

And when you are planning your time, keep in mind that range balls are free and there are many putting/pitching/chipping greens (particularly at the main resort).

Thanks. Decided on 8,4,7 with 6 as a sub if one of the others unavailble. #2 if a spot opens. Lodging at the Resort because of the practice facility on property.
