Black Gold- weight sorted and frequency sorted

vs.

Project X- only weight sorted. They are not frequency sorted like the rest of the Rifles were.

Keep in mind Royal Precision doesn't exist anymore and TT owns the intellectual property. Should be an interesting winter in the golf shaft business.

I'll take the BGs.

Unfortunately, the PX shaft from TT is an unknown entity right now. From what I understand the PX is an extremely complex shaft to manufacture and had a very high cull rate even when Royal Precision was producing them and it was RP who designed the PX shaft AND developed the special manufacring process to produce them at their (now closed) Connecticutt Plant..

It is therefore likely TT will need some time to figure out how to properly produce these shafts in volume. Oddly enough, my understand is that TT chose NOT to hire any former RP Manufacturing Personnel not will it use any of RP's PX manufacturing equipment. It almost sounds like TT is starting from scratch and simply trying to reverse engineer the PX shaft. It will be interesting to see just how long that will take and how the early TT PX shafts compare to the originals from RP. Furthermore, TT says they plan to offer many of the other popular Rifle shafts too, including Rifle standard and Flighted versions and even the "Spinner" Wedge shafts. All that indicates a signicant amount of manufacturing ramp-up time.

In the meantime, full sets of the popular PX are very already tough to find, (especially taper tips). I wish TT well, because I love the PX and sincerely hope TT's version will measure up to the original PX shaft.

Thank goodness, I acquired a few extra sets of RP-produced taper tip PX 5.5's before they were all gone...so glad I did...

I've found the BG to be smoother, with similar ballflight, and somewhat more consistency within the set. PX are good for weight, but the frequencies are just all over the place - in my playing set the 6i shaft is stiffer than the 7i shaft. The funny thing is that it doesn't seem to harm the playability much. Contrary to expectations, the BG aren't as easy to build with as I'd expected from a TT shaft. I recently blueprinted a set for a good player, and found that in creating a perfect frequency-matched set very few of the shafts wound up being trimmed as per standard spec. I myself play softstepped PX 5.5, with a 5i ss around 90, and if I played BG I'd soften the Stiffs up on those as well - both shafts are stable enough that they can be played softer than you'd think.

i'll take my PX stix over my BG stix if i had to make a choice but i hesitate to give a fair comparison of the two since i've only played them in two different iron sets. i do feel like my PX 5.5s are smoother than my BG stiffs though which bucks the usual trend.

Love the Project X shafts.

I have heard some rumblings that TT is trying to close them out for good, better stock up.

Project X is not going away! We are introducing a Flighted Version for 2007 and as someone mentioned it will be the stock shaft in the new Callaway clubs. The PX family will only only get bigger in the years to come.

I've owned both, I hated the project X from Day 1. I've been a DG X-100 player for years before experimenting with iron shafts. IMHO the Nippon Steel is much better than PX, I found the PX feeling like an absolute board with no kick. The ball flight was nice, but I could never get used to the feel. Felt like I was going to break my wrist or something with every shot. especially felt it a lot when playing off hard ground like Bandon Oregon.

On the other hand, the BG in S flex is really the perfect fit for me. I don't know that it's much softer than my old x-1's. Definitely has more feel and a great kick. the ballflight is very similar to the X-1, but feel and dispersion is much more consistant. Overall, I've been able to play much more consistant with an easier swing.

I voted for Project X myself having hit both in the same model irons head, however, I think an interesting question is why does Project X work fantastic for guys like myself and terrible for someone else ? There must be a common denominator. I myself have an average tempo and build up power slowly. I get under plane sometimes which results in a hook. Maybe guys who start strong from the top are the guys feeling the PX to be harsh ? :)

Very disappointed in the new Project X by TT. Purchased a set of PX5.5s from Golfworks and installed them in a set of MP60s. The 38" 5 iron spec'ed out on the frequency meter at 328cpms with a 5 inch clamp -- expected about 317cpms.

OK, these are butt stiff. So I popped in a 2.5" clamp and the 5 iron specs out at 307cpms. A rifle 5.5 equivalent would flex out at about 298cpms. That is a 9cpm difference or almost one full flex. So these PX5.5s spec out at just shy of a 6.5 equivalent.

Very disappointed.
