Phoenix in early March 2012 ??

We are planning a golf trip to the Phoenix Scottsdale area from February 24th to March 3rd of this winter and I am looking for some assistance.

we are staying close to the TPC Stadium course. I have a few questions:

We would like to play 5 courses, 2 high end ones and 3 mid tier courses. Any suggestions?

Is it better to book ahead of time or would you take a chance and book last minute and look for deals on tee times?

We are two couples from the Maritimes Canada and it is our first visit to the Phoenix area and would welcome any tips you could provide.

Thanks in advance

No need to book ahead of time unless you really want a specific time. Most of the sites for booking are at least a week in advance and will have plenty of options.

2 high end: Go to Wekopa Saguaro and then choose from Troon North Pinnacle or Boulders South Course.

3 mid tier: TPC Champions course, Talking Stick South course, Dove Valley, or Legend Trail

Those are based on proximity to your location.

If you don't mind travelling an extra 15-20 minutes: You can throw Gold Canyon Dinosaur Mountain, Vista Verde, Sunridge Canyon, Southern Dunes, Whirlwind(either course), Raven at Verrado, or Golf Club of Estrella.

Depending on the time of day you are willing to play, you may be able to get one of the Anthem courses(private) booked...they usually have 1 tee time per day open to the public. You may also be able to get on Quintero(top tier) with phone call.

Thanks for the information.

I am leaning towards Wekopa Saguaro and Troon North Pinnacle for our high end choices, any Idea what kind of rates I am looking at for that time of year?

I am thinking about Vista Verde, Southern Dunes, Legend Trail and possibly Longbow for our other choices, your thoughts ?

Thanks again

Well...your time here is in the uber-high season. WeKoPa is going to be $160...no breaks here on any sites. For this my recommendation is to buy the wekopa pass....it is $119 before Oct 31...then you will get your rounds for $85. So do the math...160*4=640 vs. $119+85*4=$459. You can probably sell your wekopa pass for $30 bucks after you leave since it will be mostly used by then.

Morning rounds on Troon will be $200+ unless you find a deal on one of the sites. Afternoon will be $50 less or so.

Vista Verde and Southern Dunes are good choices....Longbow is a good course, but IMO not one you play on a visit. I would recommend Raven at Verrado, Estrella, or Dino Mtn over Longbow. Definitely Dino Mtn if you can.

Sedona will be chilly that time of year...but you should be able to play assuming there is no bad weather leading up to your days there. The courses will not be in top shape because that would be offtime for our northern courses. The grasses will probably be mostly yellow and some hard ground conditions.

However, If you are able to play: Seven Canyons, Sedona Golf Resort and Oak Creek are the 3 to try and get your rounds on. Seven Canyons is private but has tee times available to the public. It is a good course with amazing views that you don't get anywhere else in Sedona unless you hike.

Definitely try and squeeze one round in up there.

Keep an eye on the Arizona Republic (the newspaper). We got a deal at the TPC Champions Course on 8th March last year for $69.00 pp with cart. Tee time was 10:30 am. Also look at Legend Trail in North Scottsdale. My favourite (Canadian, eh) course was Legacy in South Phoenix. Bring a GPS for the car and Bob's Your Uncle! As I recall, twilight rates at 1:30 got us in just before dark, so figure on 5:30 - 6 pm for dark. We used Golfnow or Golfhub and booked mostly twilight tee times. Nothing more than $60.00 per person with cart. Won't run into you down there as we are heading for Tucson this year. Have a good trip.
