Found the metal driver I played in highschool!

circa 1981
I thought I would share this little find of mine.Found my first metal driver I owned today. My parents had this custom made for me in 1981 from the local pro-shop. I can't believe how small it is!!!! Thinking about shafting it up and hitting it, also thinking about finding some Wilson Sam Snead blades like I used to play too!

I remember those early Taylor Made clubs. Still have a 3 wood. Loved them. Superior clubs for their time I believe.

Wow, that is tiny. Reminds me of "The Original One" Model Taylor Made came out with around the same time. Funny thing was back then the 1st medal woods were actually smaller than persimmon. Atleast they looked smaller.
[/quote]

They were definitely smaller. I saw a Slotline metal 5 wood in a thrift store recently and it wasn't a whole lot bigger than the ball.

That Taylor Made Original One had 12 degrees of loft, and got over on the PGA Tour as a strong fairway wood.

The combination of that club and an old Top Flite which was about 110 compression at that time produced some astronomical distances.

The younger crowd doesn't believe it, but the truth is, as small as some of those heads were, a lot of us played pretty darn well with that stuff!

I was so proud of my Wilson A2000's until I heard a guy hitting a metal driver. I went and watched and I was enamored, kinda like a virgin boy to a brothel.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Here's a comparison between a Hogan persimmon and two popular metal woods of the day. They are very small and look even smaller at address. Some of my best drives ever were with a Dynacraft metal driver combined with a Sandvik Titanium shaft. I think most guys would freak out having to play these types of clubs today. Good topic.

I can remember hitting shots with wooden (mostly laminated) clubs and small metal drivers where I could feel the ball actually compress on impact. Just absolutely killed it. I have never gotten that feeling with a 460cc driver, and I hit about 80 percent of them right in the middle of the face. Never have understood why that is. I remember Nick Price complaining years ago that large driver heads had no "punch." Probably has something to do with the fact that the heads are so much lighter today.

Great post! I was just going through my garage and dug this out. This is the driver I took to Scotland in 92 on a father-son trip. I remember having lunch in the clubhouse at Royal Troon, waiting to see if we could get out for a second round, when the starter called us to the first tee NOW! Ran out to the tee where the starter, the foursome that would play behind us, and their caddies were waiting. Tee'd it up with my shoes untied, and hit a perfect 3yd draw, long and down the middle. One of my best golf memories.

You're right about the feedback coming off the face. I believe the smaller persimmon, laminate, and early metal woods provide more accurate (and helpful) feedback than the bigger heads. It's the same with blades and cavity backs, where there's no comparison in feel when you've struck the ball well. I just bet we'll be seeing the size of drivers get smaller in the future, or the market will expand for traditional head size.

My 77 year old dad just went back to a 250cc component head driver that I assembled for him about 15 years ago. He had been using a Ping G2. Even though this club is a bit shorter in length and heavier than the G2 (really light shafts weren't available back then), he's picked up a good 15 yards. Just the opposite of what the "experts" would have one believe.

It's a tumble finished head, and for years it's the club he's been hitting into his garage net. Has a nice worn spot right in the middle of the clubface!

Hey. I should try to convince my 81 year old father to go back to the persimmon woods I made for him back in 92 when he retired at age 62. LOL! But now after getting back into persimmons and blades I'm having regrets that I built him a set of Golfsmith Tour Model IIs to go with those persimmons instead of a set of forged muscle backs. He still plays them as we had a chance to play 9 this summer. It is, however, a testament to my clubmaking abilities and those irons themselves as they have stood the test of time for almost 20 years.
