too much spin on my G10!

Recommended Posts

How about some bargain shaft advice?
So, here's the deal:

I've got a 10.5 degree Ping G10 with a stiff Proforce Blue shaft with a "mid-kick" behavior (cut to 44.5 inches) . . . I LOVE the hang time I'm getting, but the sucker spins more than I like. When I'm "on" (mid-June to mid-August), its great--but once I'm off a bit (the rest of the year) it spins a bit out of control.

Any advice--is the key to go to a lower kick shaft? Any advice on bargain-prices shaft options? Maybe something that is a few years old?

I wouldn't exactly call the Axivcore Blue "Mid-kick" - it's more like low-kick. The actual flexible tip section of the shaft is designed to give a high initial launch with higher spin for maximum carry. The key to to your dilemma could well be the oposite of your thinking - a lower kick shaft is what you have at the moment. What you probably require is a shaft with a higher kickpoint. Axivcore Black or Red would be a better option, or if you're looking for something even cheaper, the good old UST V2 still does the job.

Yeah--the V2 is good deal these days, and I've hit it before and trust it more than something I've not hit before [my budget being what it is, and not being anywhere near a bigbox-style golf store, I can't tinker].

I wonder if shortening the shaft might have something to do with affecting how much it spins the ball?

Any thoughts? Does shortining one's driver shaft contribute to spinning the ball or no?

Well, in a vacuum yes it probably would, even if only by influencing the golfer to move the swing plane a touch more upright. However, there are so many real-world factors that I'd have a hard time coming to that conclusion myself.

The Axiv Blue is not a bad shaft, just higher spin. You can get an HMOI V2, or a V2 66 pull for around $30 almost any day on ebay. The Axiv Tour Black has gotten a lot of support as being high launch and reasonably low spin. As a cost issue only, pulls are usually a good bet. There are a lot of Accra shafts available right now (decendant of the Axiv Proforce line) or even a VS Proto or NV would do the job and they're cheap now too.

I certainly don't play in a vacuum.

In the end, I went to one of my backup drivers--a original Ping rapture with 9 deg.--had the stiff Aldila VS Proto ByYou shaft pulled out and put in the G10. Kinda hurt because that was a good set up for windy days, but there a great club shop up in the Southern Pines/Aberdeen/Pinehurst area--Robert's--and Bob up there is a pro. He pulled it and stuck it in the G10 and I've been getting some good results--more stable, much less spin. We'll see if I pick up a few yards next summer when I play more and my swings in better shape.

Drivers don't spin one season and not the next. Your swing is causing the spin, not the club.

Yeah, that WAS something I said about myself in the original post, wasn't it . . . my question about shafts regarded whether or not it was possible to lessen the mistakes with a shaft chnage.
