Where to play April 22-27
Going to be in Santa Fe for a week and was wondering where I could play. Not the cheapest or the most expensive. Best value within say, 20 miles of downtown? Thanks.

Cochiti is SOUTH of Santa Fe about half way to Albuquerque. I'd skip Marty Sanchez, it is a local Santa Fe course but very average. Black Mesa is very challenging and near by to Santa Fe. Albuquerque is only 55 miles, I recommend Twin Warriors in Bernalillo, NM (just before you hit Albq) it is on the Santa Ana Reservation. I also highly recommend Paako which is in the mountains above Albq. Reasonable prices at all. Many courses around Albq. that are quality.

The best course in Santa Fe (and probably NM) is private it is Los Companas. If you are a member of a country club you might be able to contact them for a letter of introduction, it is a Nicklaus design. Price is fairly high for NM, approx. $150.

Black Mesa and Cochiti look like the ones. Thanks again.

BTW, Do I need to bring a "desert club"?

I forgot, they also love the Blue Corn. On the square, upstairs patio, great beer and food.

Be sure to try the New Mexican style enchiladas. Blue corn tortillas, stacked not rolled, smothered in Hatch green chili, topped with a fried egg.

Here's a link where I provided quite a lot of info on golf courses in the area. http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/225632-albuquerque-santa-fe/page__st__30__p__4636583__hl__albuquerque__fromsearch__1#entry4636583

As mentioned above, Black Mesa in Espanola north of SF about 40 min. is probably the most interesting and highly regarded golf closest to SF. BM is a great track with some incredible views but could be so much more. It has a dirt cart path, no GPS, no beverage cart, and the food is marginal. It can be very tough with over 130 bunkers and some tricky if not unfair greens (buried elephants) which really puts me off. It also has a few blind tee shots which I don't like. However, for 15-20 minutes further (less than 1 hr from downtown SF) there are many options. PaaKo Ridge being one of those options, consistently ranked in the top 100 (about 45 minutes from SF). Very beautiful if you play original 18 (I don't care for the new 9) but it can beat the crap out of you. They are now at their peak rate of $114 for weekends and the course isn't in that good of shape right now as they aerated last week. Sandia which is 1 hr south of SF on the north side of ABQ is pretty nice right now. I played there Friday and the greens are still a little bumpy but better than most as they aerated about 3-4 weeks ago, while most everyone has done it in the last week or two. Sandia's peak rate is $85 dollars for weekend play. Marty Sanchez is a great track with iffy conditions just 10 minutes outside of SF. I love the layout but it is a muni that could be so much more. Twin Warriors is another great track north of ABQ in Bernalillo and host the PGA Club Pro Championships every 3-4 years. Cochiti is another nice course about 45+ minutes south of SF. Shouldn't have to deal with snakes yet and the desert shot can be a little detrimental to the club, I chunked up my 8 iron recently. We typically play the desert as a lateral hazard if you don't want to beat up your club. Some of the distances and directions are a little off in some of the posts above but all that were mentioned are less than 1 hrs from SF as most of the drive is via the highway. Double check mapquest for actual directions. PM me for more info. Good luck and have fun.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
