What do you look for in a partner?

We were having this discussion on the course yesterday and sitting here watching it rain today, I figured it might be an interesting discussion.


As we head into tournament season, we were discussing different formats and what type of partner you need for each. I'm a mid-handicap guy (usually around a 10) and tend to pick different types of partners for different events. For instance, next week I'll play in a member-guest that has a quota system and have invited a high-handicap 22 to be my partner. He's the type who has the ability to par any hole, but will make several big numbers per round which won't matter in that format. in

Obviously, the most important part of picking a partner is playing with someone you like since tournament rounds tend to drag quite a bit. However, beyond that I tend to pick folks who best increase my odds given a particular format. Beyond that, I like to get someone who helps my weaknesses. The majority of tournaments tend to be best ball and for that I try to get consistant low-single digit or scratch guys.

Anyway, what about you? Any particular trait you look for in a partner? Or is it only about the fun? For me, while I want to have fun, I tend to have more fun when I win or place well, so I try to pick the best possible partner to do both.

Well I think you pretty much summed it up.

Someone who's strengths are beneficial to the format and who's enjoyable to play with.

Assuming you have a choice in the matter, not much else left.

I've read that the consistent player and wild player make the best partners. Not always a low hdcp and high hdcp pairing. I am a 7 but inconsistent, so I would team up with a steady 15-20 hdcp. I would not want to team up with an inconsistent high capper, nor an inconsistent low-mid capper.
