how do you index a 2man best ball?

Group 1 has Player A with a 5 index and Player B with a 15 index

 

Group 2 has Player C with an 11 index and Player D with an 18 index.

 

The indexes have been adjusted for the course.

 

Some people I have talked to said to not worry about indexing in a 2man best ball. Others have said you average it out for each team. Others said you got off the low index.

 

Looking for some help.

Matchplay or strokeplay?
Assuming it's matchplay because strokeplay would be pretty obvious. Strokeplay is 3/4 of full handicap for each player.
Matchplay is 3/4 of the difference from the lowest handicap. Therefore B would get 8 strokes, C 5 strokes, D 10 strokes

It is done differently in lots of place, but where I caddy, you go off of the lowest guy on each team. B gets 4 strokes. C gets 6, D gets 13.

Thanks for the responses. My group is leaning toward the format listed below. Please feel free to offer your pros and cons:

Group 1 avg index = 10

Group 2 avg index = 14.5 (lets say 14)

Result = only player D (highest index on the high index team) will get 4 strokes.


Does this process seem reasonable?

No. It's a better ball. Each player should get his strokes according to handicap.

Lowest player plays scratch. Everyone get's strokes on their difference from him. So B gets 10, C gets 6, and D gets 13.

Low HC should always play scratch in my opinion, because it's kinda useless and basically a wash anyway, when all 4 players are getting strokes on the same hole. It also works this way that the lowest handicap (in this case an 18) isn't getting strokes on the easiest hole on the course.

Handicaps should never be lowered in best ball events. Because a player is always playing his own ball completely through the hole. Alternate shots, scramble events, etc. should be the only time HCs are taken using a percentage of one's index.

Correct sir! My bad, the OP clearly indicated an 8 person game.

Most of the ones I have played add the HC and take 40% as the team HC. Then the team gets a stroke on the holes for that HC. SO for 40%, team 1 would get a 8 team HC with a stroke/pop on the 8 hardest holes. Team 2 would get ~12 team HC with a stroke/pop on the 12 hardest holes.

You have to do good on your pop holes.
