Driver Flex Recommendation

Cleveland Ultralite

First of all, I know the correct answer is to go get fitted or go to GG and get on a launch monitor. But with two young boys and coaching and work, I don't have time. And I don't plan to buy new from them, so I don't feel right swinging there to get the information.

I am thinking of getting a new cleveland ultralight driver (either 270 or 290). I currently have a Macgregor MT 9.5 with stiff flex (the Golfsmith clearance from last spring). I may be a "tweener" on driver flex. A good drive is 265 yds for me, and average drive hitting straight is about 220. I would give you my iron distances, but since I play the amped up TM Burner 2.0's. I hit my 54* Cleveland wedge about 95 on a full swing. I use the S&T swing, and I would consider my tempo to be pretty quick. I couldn't hit a draw if I was paid to; I am for the left side of the fairway, and on a good day I'm in the left side of the fairway to the center, and on a bad day I am in the right rough. My bad drives are usually push-fades, I don't consider it to be an all out slice.

Anyway, would anyone with experience with the Cleveland Ultralight recommend the 270 or 290 with regular or stiff flex.

I think I would go with the 290. It's a square set-up and since you are pretty athletic (unless you coach the math team), I would think the 270 would feel to light and/or whippy. I know it would for me. You might however like the closed face - I think it is 2 degrees - of the 270. I have the same kind of flight (fade or push fade) commonly, so I think I would go with the 290 and work on turning it over a little.

Depending on how high (regular) or how low (stiff) you would want your flight, I would lean those 2 ways.

Since we are talking about the Cleveland driver and the light weight Miyazaki shafts I would hit both the regular flex and the stiff with your swing speed. That shaft has a pretty lively tip and you might do better with the stiff flex. If you look at other driver models the regular flex might be a better fit. I have a ss in the low to mid 90's and felt the Miyazaki 43 shaft in the SL290 a little too lively.

Sounds to me like a stiff flex for the Miyazaki (how light they are) would be the way to go, BUT... I'm no expert.... good luck!

Thanks for the input. I was thinking stiff flex, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't like the 20 handicapper with blades. Although I am an 18 handicapper with blades, I don't get them out much.
