suggestions?
Traveling to elizabeth city for a coast guard a school graduation.

Looking to play a few rounds. Any suggestions for where to play?

Were looking at pinehurst 2 and quail hollow. But there 4-5 hours away. Would like to play top tier courses for rounds 60 or less.

I know virginia beach has the arnold palmer and another one. Are these amazing or just good?

Need help here.

First off - most all courses in the VA Beach area have a military discount.

Heron Ridge is a fred couples course
VA Beach national is the old TPC VA Beach
Signature at westneck is the Arnold Palmer design

You can also play at Little Creek Naval Base or Oceania Naval air station - those courses are not comparable to others, but good price for price

If you can do some negotiating, Bayville Golf Club I think is the best course I have played. It is a private Tom Fazio design.

Nothing insanely special about the Va Beach courses. The ones mentioned above are usually in good enough shape though. All of those are overpriced compared to some other area courses. If I had to pick one on course design it would be Heron Ridge.

If you can make it to Suffolk I'd recommend Riverfront and Nansemond River with Nansemond having a much more interesting layout. The Palmer and Nicklaus course at Bay Creek are really nice due to where they were built as they're on the Eastern Shore and it's really beautiful and kept in immaculate condition. Those are a little more expensive but there's usually a deal on playing both courses that brings it down to reasonable. Another course not far is Cahoon Plantation in Chesapeake. It's more links style golf than anything but it's a really nice course and can be challenging. Greens can be tough. Very well kept.

Going south a little I'd recommend The Sound Golf Links at Albemarle Plantation. Really cool course and challenging. It's not a long course but you have to hit it straight there. If you're hitting it straight it's not bad at all but if you're not, you can lose quite a few balls and put up a big number. It's in Hertford and maybe like 30 minutes south of Elizabeth City and easy to get to. There's a road that will take you over to Currituck also and I'd recommend The Carolina Club. That's probably my favorite of any I've mentioned so far. Nice layout, always in great shape, challenging, and beautiful greens. Further south on that highway is The Pointe which is a sister course of The Carolina Club. Faster and more difficult greens but a shorter and more wide open course. It's nice for sure but I prefer The Carolina Club between the two. Also on that stretch of road is Kilmarlick which I've only played twice and is a nice course and Goose Creek which isn't on the same level as those.

I've lived in Chesapeake all my life and played all these courses numerous times. If you don't mind driving upwards of an hour or hour and a half then it brings a lot of great courses into play. If you had like two days you could devote to golf I'd recommend taking a day and driving to the Eastern Shore and playing the two courses at Bay Creek and the other day playing at either Albemarle Plantation or The Carolina Club. If you had more time than that I'd add in Cahoon Plantation, Riverfront, Nansemond River, Heron Ridge. Those four are all very nice with Cahoon being the closest to you in Elizabeth city and you can't go wrong with any of them. Signature at West Neck and Va Beach National are both equally as nice as those but they tend to be priced higher and IMO not any better for the money.

Enjoy your trip and hope you get some good weather.

You guys helped us out so much! Ive been trying to get out and explore as much as possible while here in elizabeth city but have been so busy with school that i haven't been able to get out to more than a couple of the par 3 courses around. We are really looking for the wow factor when it comes to a golf course for us to play after my graduation. Not looking for as much history as we are beauty with the course/courses we want to play. Really just looking for another memory for us guys to remember and talk about over a few beers every time we get together. Thanks again guys. Keep the info coming!
Ill keep you posted on my new unit...

CGBM, I get your username now. Didn't catch it the first time around. Slice88, congrats on getting through school. What's your rate? With the two of you I think we are up to 5-6 coasties on WRX that I am aware of.

Retired Chief (USNR) here. You might want to check out Bide-A-Wee , rated the number 1 public course in VA by Golf Digest last year and Sleepy Hole Park. Sleepy Hole used to have LPGA tournaments a few years back. Both are good courses.

Before I retired from the National Weather Service last year , I used to maintain our weather equipment at ECG.

Bide a wee is nice. It's probably the course I've played more than any other in the area. Played in their association for a while until I joined Cedar Point last year. The downside with Bide a wee is how much they pack people on the course. I didn't mention them because it will be the most likely to have any course condition issues and will most likely take a while. But it's a great layout and when they've got it right it's really nice. I play in their 9 hole mixer every Friday.

I travel to VB quite often and if you have 1 solid day, do yourself a favor and travel over the bridge to the Eastern Shore and go play the Jack and Arnie courses at Bay Creek. Bay Creek

Trust me when I say the 36 hole resort is some of the finest golf you will ever play. The conditions are always perfect and both courses are spectacular.

This place is kinda out of the way but the prices seem reasonable for a course ranked 70/100 of top public courses. It is just north of UVa and I am hoping to check it out in 3 weeks. Has anyone on here been?

I've played Spring Creek several times and it's a course you will enjoy. Course is always in top notch condition and the layout is solid.
