Tar Heels, where do you play?

Just as it says, where do you play mostly? Just curious to see where all the North Carolinians are at. I play at The River, a semi-private in Bunn. Small staff, great layout, like any small country courses it could use some help maintenance-wise, but it is a fun place to play. Only 6400 yards from the tips but somehow plays much longer. Greens are tough when they are slow, diabolical when they are slick.

About 300 miles north of Chapel Hill

But when I'm back home, I play UNC Finley, Heritage Wake Forest, The Neuse and anything around Pinehurst any chance I get.

I typically play a course that is a few miles from my house named Reedy Creek. It is South East of Raleigh a few mile from I-40. Public course that is in great shape, thanks to a new super.

OP, when I was in college at Louisburg, we used to play Lake Royale near Bunn. It was in the late 80's and only had 9 holes open then. Have you played it and what kind of shape is it in now?

Jbird, after a google search, I found out your course, The River is the course at Lake Royale. Evidently the same one I played as a college kid. Seems like there was a huge green that had two holes cut in, that were there for two different holes. A shared green. Is it still there like that?

Yes it is....I'm sure it has changed a lot since the late 80's. That was about the first time I played it and can't remember what it was like then. I think I played it soon after the second nine opened, which is now the front. Greens have changed from Bent to Champion Bermuda. It is in fairly good shape now with the exception of some of the bunkers. The website you found offers a fairly accurate depiction of the course.

I'm at Lonnie Poole in Raleigh. My folks live on the Outer Banks, and when I'm there I play Duck Woods.

I tried to play there in May when I was down for a nephew's graduation, but it was booked. I've still yet to play it but have heard good things about it.

It's getting better and better. I guess this is the third summer since it opened, and I know last year it still had some growing in to do. Very demanding track tee to green, and the greens themselves have a lot of undulation and camouflaged breaks.

I played Lonnie Poole last Thursday and it was in fantastic condition. OH - and they FINALLY made #3 a par-5! I play all around the area - The Crossings, The Preserve, Chapel Ridge, The Neuse, Wildwood Green, Lake Shore, Falls Village, Eagle Ridge...etc.

Great golf around the Triangle!

Yeah, they did that last year. It was a par 5 anyway - par 4 in name only. I've only been on that green in two twice, and never from the tips. Makes for a very interesting first 9 holes now, with 3 par 5's and 3 par 3's.

I play it every time I am in RDU...Poole is a BIG BOY track to be sure. After about 3 mores years of grow-in may be my favorite public track anywhere south of Bethpage.

They recently re-rated the tees and I still think they are too low. No way LP is a 70.7 from the red tees - too punishing when you get off the fairways and greens. 72.9 from the black tees might be close to correct, but no way the red tees are more than 2 shots easier. They don't even put the championship tees out during regular play - too many heroes and too many 6 hour rounds.

Last week was only the 2nd time I've played LP and I went in expecting to get beat up. 1st time I played it was President's Day last year and it was rock-hard and the wind was blowing 30 mph. I shot 105 from the whites (6,100?) and felt pretty good about it.

Last week we played the reds (6,500) and I was pleasantly surprised. LP looks much worse off the tee than it actually is. Although, missing fairways will cost you in most cases. I only hit 6 fairways, but hit 9 GIR. 35 putts didn't help on my way to 84 but I'll take it. Greens were receptive and rolling great!

Currently in a move to Wilson, but have been playing Bradford Creek out in Greenville, which is kinda like playing in a flat field with holes in it sometimes. Also have played Carolina Colours in New Bern and my least favorite by a MILE, Quaker Neck in Trenton, NC do not go there... Other than that all the other courses are very nice for the money and extreamly fun to play.

Southern Pines Golf Club. Classic Donald Ross. Really doesn't get any better than a beautiful classic course that can be enjoyed by all levels of players.

I played this course two years ago and wouldn't hesitate to go back

I live in Raleigh and really like Lonnie Poole, River Ridge, and Heritage. However, my favorite course is still Mill Creek in Mebane even though it's about a 40 minute drive from my house.

I play at Cypress Landing in Chocowinity.

Good track...I have played there a number of times, though not in the last few years.

Cypress Landing re did there greens last summer. They re planted them with Mini Verde Bermuda. Took a little time to get use to the speed, but I am loving them.

Hate that you are moving. We will have to get together and play sometime. Lots of good courses in the Wilson area.

I live in North Durham and usually play Hillandale due to it being so close and its a pretty good public track. Its closed until August 2nd because they are putting Bermuda greens in, but this has forced me to venture out a little more. I also frequent Lake Shore, Falls Village, and I love the Davis Love design The Preserve. I still need to play Finley, Duke, Lonnie, and Heritage, but I'm sure they will happen before the season ends.
