New Putter Shaft

Decided to go to a different style of putter about 2 months ago, went from a 2 ball mid cut 2 33" to a Ping Anser Redwood. Was having some confidence issues after the 4 year love fest with my 2 ball and wanted a different look and feel. Love the look and feel of the Redwood, but going from a 400 gram putter head to 340 has been a bit tough, lack a little distance control with the 340. Decided to order the 218 fram putter shaft from Golfsmith and just got it today. I have some clubwork experience, what would be the easiest way to remove the current shaft without "burning" the finish on the Redwood?? Maybe this should be in the workshop area but I am also looking for some thoughts or reviews on this idea. Thank you in advance and Happy Holidays!!!

Just a heat gun would work great. Wouldn't burn it unless you used:

 

1)A Torch

2)Kept the torch in the same spot for to long.

 

Also, a crock pot full of sand on high heat ;):) Don't ask how I know that. LOL

Definitely agree that a heat gun is the perfect tool for this application, but if you're feeling a bit adventurous, a hot rod might be an interesting experiment, not to mention a good excuse to buy a new tool. :drinks:

I have the 200 gram True Temper putter shaft in a Newport Mil Spec. It comes in .370 only. However, I just took my belt sander slightly extra to the tip and it fit just fine into the Newport's .355 hosel.

 

I really like this shaft.

 

I noticed 2 things with this shaft. 1. I have a MUCH better touch on long putts. 2. I roll the ball better (the ball tracks on line better with less skidding) off the face. I have not figured out why this is, but I think it is because the shaft is really stiff which effectively adds more loft to the putter at impact. Maybe, Stan Utley is right about needing more loft on putters.

I have a hard time envisioning how the very minimal flex in a putter shaft at impact effects loft. i know it can feel different as vibration is transmitted differently, but please explain how the flex in a putter shaft can add or subtract loft.

For me and maybe me only: A more flexible shaft causes the head to lag behind slightly longer through impact than a stiff one, which translates to less effective loft.

 

I always liked the feel of a softer putter shaft, but after playing with the heavy TT, I noticed the ball seemed to track better. I was curious about this so I put an R300 3 iron shaft in another Newport that I have and I noticed the ball hops slightly more in the first few inches after impact.

Are you saying that your putter stroke is fast enough to notice a difference in putter head position at impact between a stiff putter shaft and a more flexible putter shaft?

 

Sorry, I have a really hard time picturing that being possible.

My stroke isn't fast, but yes I am saying I can feel the difference in putter shaft flexes. I notice a difference in the way the ball rolls depending on the flex.

I must say an interesting pint has been raise. My boss filled his putter shaft with sand recently, completely full by the way. I personally loved the weight (hence the heavier shaft I purchased) and I know this will sound crazy, but I felt the flex when I hit putts. So I figured by buying the heavier shaft (which has thicker walls) even if I wanted to add more weight it would not feel so "flexible".

I can certainly understand being able to feel the difference in shaft stiffness as they likely transmit vibration differently and may sound different too.

 

I was just trying to understand the whole head-lag through impact part. That I can't get my mind around.

I have added sand and salt to putter shafts before. The TT shaft feels much stiffer, and I like this shaft much better than the feel of the sanded or salted shafts.

Do they make those heavy shafts in double bend? I can't seem to find one for my monza corza. Golf smith just has the straight ones that I seen.

Sorry, no double bend. Standard and flare only.

Never really felt shaft flex though in a putter shaft. Looked at this on a couple of videos taking over 1000 frames a second and never noticed a shaft flex on a putter. Just not enough inertia is raised by the speed of the stroke. Hence the reason you don't see putter shafts being offered in R,S, and X flex's
