Proto ON OFF 450cc Driver w/ Pics

currently "tour" only but coming soon in 2007 for the public
I was able to get pictures of the new for 2007 ON OFF 450cc driver from Daiwa Seiko Inc. The ON OFF Power Bridge driver is currently "tour" only and is currently being tested on the Japan PGA as well as a few selected American players. I have been told it may see some play next month at the Sony Open since one of the players that is currently testing it is absolutely killing the ball with it. This driver is shafted with the Roddio Pentacross W-7 WA X Flex. I've yet to try this shaft but I've heard its a total monster in it's stiffness. It's also in my opinion one of the cooler looking shafts. One side has the Roddio shaft name and the opposite side is completely white with only the logo.

Here's the pics...... :drinks:

Wow, that is a great looking head from address. Is this the same Daiwa that used to make golf clubs in the 80's? I don't follow the Japanese clubs at all. Have they continued to make clubs all along?

Yes it's the same Daiwa. ON OFF is they're "new" name in Japan. They are attempting to become a bigger presence in Japan and America. I'm not positive but I heard the name ON OFF was to attract the more youthful buyer.

When I went to Japan last year, I was chatting it up with some of the store reps and I was really intrigued by what ON/OFF had. The had some very nice looking clubs, that while marketed toward younger players appealed to traditionalists (high quality, low gimick). I wanted to like their stuff more, but alas...RIGHTY ONLY! :drinks:

Great pics Reid. I would love to see some more ON/OFF presence, especially in the states.

Thanks George....ON OFF really has some nice stuff coming out. Their toughest problem will be with club makers. The hosel design on the woods is not your typical design you see on golf clubs. The inner sleeve is important in setting the face angle. If you're not trained by them, or have the equipment to do the reshafts, it makes it difficult for people to buy them used and custom fit it to themselves.

Hopefully I'll get some irons in to photo soon. ;)

Hi Reid,

How's life in Hawaii? I've been by one of the ONOFF stores here in BKK, and headed to one at a range this afternoon, but I wanted to ask you about the current drivers. Are the Red/hi launch drivers fairly draw biased (weighting and or face angles).

I tried a demo of the Plus iron in a shop and I was impressed (haven't tried other irons or the woods outside though). So it sounds like ONOFF will have an 'official' presence in the States in 2007, that's good. Will they have some advice/support for people who want to reshaft (keen to try the Roddio, but haven't seen one yet).

K2....the ON OFF's faces can be adjusted easily by an ON OFF certified clubmaker. There is an inner sleeve in the hosel that can be turned to either close/open/square the face. So far the one's I've seen in the shops have been very square.

As for '07 presence, I'm not sure how much of a push they are going to make. Although I did see some rep's at the Sony Open this past January. Hopefully if I see them next week I can find out more info. :fool:

You are bad! Now you really make me want to try this club! Damn you!!! :)

THanks for the pictures though! :D

Joe.....it's nice to be on the other side of the tempting for once! :)

Thanks for the info re the sleave and hosel... that is VERY interesting imho. I'm just wondering if they will have a few certified dealers in the States this year (maybe they already do, but I only saw the one distributor listed for the US the last time I checked...).

If you find out anything at the Sony though, be sure to let us know (and throw up some pics;-).

The ONOFF's have indeed gone retail in Japan with both the 440cc and 450cc versions. They do however come stock with the ONOFF Smoothkick MP series shafts.

The Roddio Pentacross shaft is amazing and very underrated. In a recent shootout against the Axiv V, Diamana White, Tour AD PT-6, Fuji Rombax and Mizuno Quad 6Butt, it easily took top honors in distance but as Reid pointed out was the stiffest shaft of the bunch...

Did a few scans for the few who can read Japanese... :fool:

Gochin or Reid,

Do you know if you can currently order the club with the Roddio shaft?

One other note/question with their drivers for anyone who tests one. They only have one large Tungesten weight at the back of the club, while several other drivers have two, one toward each corner, be it in a rounded head such as the Eppon or in a square FT-i or Summo shape. The ONOFF looks great, but will the drivers with two weights spread out towards the corners (sorry for the lack of a better term) have a higher MOI and thus be more forgiving?

Hi K2,

As with most Japanese drivers, they usually product launch with a stock shaft first. I'm pretty sure down the line it will be available with custom shafts as is the case with most J-Spec drivers. The weighted port at the back is to help get the ball up while ONOFF's Power Bridge technology is said to increase ball speed off the face of the driver for more distance, by absorbing the impact of the ball and deflecting the energy back.

Here's their site with some specs on the driver and shaft (clearer than the mag pics I posted above):
