Here's a way to make ANY putter 'feel' soft

I dunno if any of you have already tried this but one year when I was putting with a Cameron Tei3 and didn't want the freshly punched greens to mark up the Tei3 face on my putter I put lead tape on the face - just the el cheapo stuff they sell in strips. It felt so good I tried it on a stainless B60, and some other putters. Anyway, makes even the harshest putters feel buttery smooth and doesn't give you a mushy or 'weird' feel. Thought I'd pass that one on.

Not 100% but in Tournament play that may be illegal. Pretty confident that you cannot alter the face of a club.

Sounds nice - but it might be agaist the Rules - 4-2/b specifically.

If a material or substance has been applied to the face in order to protect it (e.g., to increase wear resistance) or to clean it, then it would probably be permitted. However, if the purpose of the application is to influence the movement of the ball or assist the player in making a stroke, it would be prohibited. Any type of tape or similar material added to the face is not permitted for any purpose.

I'd be willing to bet that 95% of all of our rounds are not tournaments :) Besides, I truely put it on to protect the face at the time.

Might work, but don't really see the point in spending a few hundred dollars on a Scotty putter, to put lead tape on the face and completely change the feel.

Just ram a soft piece of lead down the shaft and it makes the putter feel way softer and solid.

I'd have to disagree with the fundamental thinking here.

 

Regardsless if its a tournament round or not the game should be played to the rules laid down by the governing bodies.

I agree with wwhitehead and tomba. Even if it is a "casual round" - it still should be played by the Rules -- especially if you are posting your score. If the modification to the club helps your score - your a "reverse sandbagger" when you enter a tournament.

Even if it was legal, what is the point of taking the face technology (milling, grooves, etc.) out of the equation? Makes no sense to me.

• It will not help your putting. Lead tape is not a uniform surface, and merely stuck to a putter face with adhesive, the ball will react differently and randomly
  
• Why be afraid to putt with a putter face that's designed to contact the ball?
  
• You will not help your putting if you use lead tape for your 'casual round', then for the next round against your buddy, you can't use it because it's against the rules

:) Tough crowd. Just something to try if you want to see what one of the 'buttery' putters feel like. I personally play in a lot of mens club events so I don't do it (plus I don't have that beauty anymore). Maybe when they punch the greens I'll put some packing tape on the face and sole to protect it though. That wouldn't be illegal and hopefully it would annoy any anal retentive people here :)

Umm, taping up your putter to protect it from the grass is pretty much as anal retentive as it gets, my friend. :)

Actually, when they punch the greens, it usually not much grass and A LOT of sand... actually all sand for a few weeks. I guess double :) (cool) for ya.
