Plumb Bobbing

Do you do it? How does it help you?

I was just wondering which of you plumb bob because one of my friends does it and it helps him to read the green better. He tried to explain it to me but I couldn't understand it.

I also have never understood how this works.

 

I think if you know what your doing and looking for it would work.

 

I laugh when I see terrible golfers try this because I know they have no idea what they are looking at.

I am sorry, what exactly is Plumb Bobbing? I haven't heard this term yet.

I plumb bob. IMO it works quite well for me but also others don't believe it works. In order for it to work you need to: ex. find a doorway (always 90* unless the builder sucked :) ) and keep slightly turning your putting until the shaft of the putter aligns with the doorway, perfectly!! Then mark the spot were your thumb was (with a sharpie or something) and as you go to plumb bob place your thumb on the exact location in which you put the mark. Last thing you need to find which eye (left or right) is your dominant eye and keep just that one open while doing the plumb bob. You also have to make sure you're aligned with the hole.

 

How it works

When you go to read the putt you put your thumb on the marked spot as said before (place your thumb and fingers on grip softly or it will not work properly). The shaft will stay at the 90* but your feet may be on the slope which makes the shaft appear as it is on a slant. Were the shaft slants to is about were you should hit your ball. As stated before it works for some and not for others but it's worth a try because I believe it to help me, but I just use it to get an idea and also look behind the ball which helps me get a good read of the greens.

I understand how it works and can usually do it quite well, but it takes quite a long time to do it precisely, so I don't usually do it. I only do it when it's a putt which matters. Yeah, basically, the above post sums it up perfectly.

I knew what it was but didn't really no how to do it. I might have to try it this season and see if it works for me or not.

I used it for a year in the 05 season, but got away from it when my pro told me that it wasn't how you should read a green. If I have no club about the break of a putt, I'll use it. Working with it in 05 didn't really show me exactly where to hit it, because in my mind how much a putt breaks depends on your speed, not just your line. IMO, just something used to confirm break.

In a scientific stance it doesn't work. Dave Pelz discussed this once as well. In order to have this work, you need either a perfectly flat green, or a green with constant gradient. That means the green must not have any roundness, it would need to be on a perfect slant to one direction at an equal amt for every foot or w.e. chosen distance. It works for some people, but it has been determined it is more mental than anything. It will merely confirm what you believe usually. Not a technically sound method. But hey, w.e. floats your boat.

I used to hate it and now I love it...I play college golf, and sometimes have a hard time reading the greens, and this really helps me...Once someone explained it, it worked great!
