Newport Detour and Nicklaus A-Line 2?

Anyone notice the similarity?

My local shop has had the Nicklaus A-line 1 in stock for quite a while (basically an answer with a striaght line alignment aid stickin out the back). Then recently I see the new Newport Detour, which is the exact same design but with the curved line.

Do you suppose this is where Scotty got the idea?

(Sorry about the lack of pics of the A-line 1, but I couldn't find anything but pics of the A-line 2).

I'm not bashing Scotty, he just seem to have the resources $$$ to bring the other peoples ideas to the forefront.

The HOG Superlines pictured above were the first and second putters to be approved under the new USGA Plain in Shape Rules interpretations in June 2004. The same putters were used for numerous top five finishes on the PGA TOUR by a top, top player, before the USGA initially ruled against the putters. They were subsequently used by numerous players in 2004 and 2005 after gaining USGA approval.

Wasn’t that (HOG) putter that Furyk was going to put into play at the 2003 US Open? USGA Ruled it was illegal, so he picked up the “Baby Ben” like Monday of the tournament?

Yep - I remember hearing that story -then the "plain in shape" ruling changed around as the big $$$ manufacturers made themselves heard.

There is some other threads on here saying the samething, there are many putters out there that look like that that came before the Deport. Scotty has the hype the other companies don't have.

this may seem as a a strange first post, but i have been lurking for some time. When so many designs are "similar" between designers, are there not patent issues with this?

Maybe someone should turn the tables on him (Scotty). Exactly replicate a 009, offer it in the "unique" finishes that Scotty does, call it something else, and sell it for $250.

 

I guess it just seems as though no one really does to Scotty what he does to others (other than some really cheap knock-off companies). Maybe Scotty just has better lawyers...

You are totally correct about the high-priced lawyers. My bet is Scotty would cry louder than anyone...if someone knocked-off his few designs.

As mentioned above there is a big hole in the market for a well made reasonably priced 009 type Carbon Steel Anser. Scotty isn't making a nice carbon steel solid face NP for OTR any more perhaps someone should be............

Exactly. They would sell like hotcakes. And it would drive Scotty crazy. But it would only work if it were done by someone that could do it right.

I would say, let's see it! But I do really like the shape of the 009. In my opinion, it's the perfect anser style putter, just radically over-priced. So for it to really do it for me, it would have to be pretty much that exact head.

I gotta say, it is going to be very hard for Mr Byron to match what we have seen from Dave Billings and his Machine putters. However, competition is great and I for one believe the more the merrier.

 

In spite of owning several Camerons over the years, I would also love to seem Scotty knocked off his perch, although I don't think another Anser clone differentiated only by the finish, the milling and the size of the bumpers is likely to do it.

 

Surely the collective wisdom of putter designers can think of something fresh enough not to recycle Solheim's ideas, yet traditional enough to break through the remarkable conservatism evinced by putter aficionados. I'm still surprised we play 460cc square weight-shifting divers made from carbon and titanium, and now mixed combo GI irons and yet still putt with 30 year old designs.

 

IMHO, the only golfers more conservative than putterheads are wedgeheads (no-one's managed to design a better wedge than Sarazen's)?
