Steelfiber i95 v. Player's Spec AMI 99 v. GD DI 85 gram iron shafts

Just passed 60, and for that birthday I have decided to go graphite in my irons. I think.

 

Driver ss 93 -94, and I currently play the Titleist Nippon 105T in Stiff.

 

I've tried i95's once before in R, and thought they played stiff and lacked feel - or maybe they were just too light to time. I may have to give them another chance.

 

But before I put them in a whole set, I wanted to find out about the Player's Spec from Aerotech. I'm also interested in the Graphite Design AD DI iron shaft in 85 grams in R flex.

 

Any experts out there?

 

Or will I have to become the expert by trying all three?

All i can say is they play stiffer than stated flex, I believe kuchar uses stiff. I had some x flex in long irons and they were too stiff, thuis lacked feel. I'm going to go stiff or soft step the x flex. Presently I play x100 shafts.

I have 2 sets of AMI players specs - S and X - parallel

To get these shafts to feel great - play heavy progressive SW - start 4I at D2 or D3 - PW ends up D5 or D6

go up 1/2 SW/club

consider 3/8 inch gapping

very easy to MOI match as shafts progressively get heavier

flo/spine/purr each shaft if desired

Build a 7 iron to D2.5 or D3 at your preferred length, lie

Launch monitor to dial in

If overall club feels light, try a balance certified counter balance - SW decreases but overall static weight increases -overall weight similiar to DG S400 7 iron

Launch monitor - compare data

The AMI have extremely high quality control - fit, finish impeccable

Great dampening for vibration absorption - better dampening, better accuracy IMHO with balance certified counterbalance installed

The reason you disliked the i95's was simply because the bend profile did not suit your swing. The i95's have a bend profile very similar to dynamic gold and have a very stiff tip section. This is most likely why you found the shaft to feel stiff and dead.

The Nippon 105 is a Titleist/Cobra model but the majority of the lighter weight Nippon's shafts have very smooth bending profiles gradually loosing stiffness from butt to tip. The tip in the Nippon is significantly softer than the i95 or anything in the Aerotech range for that matter.

I don't have access to the UST Recoil bend profiles but I would suggest you have a look at this range as I think the profile is closer to what you currently play.

Don't dismiss trying the Nippon NS pro 950 (KBS Tour 90 or True temper GS95/GS85) while high end graphite is gaining popularity I think you will be able to find similar performance for much less cash by sticking to light weight steel. Much easier to find and test as well.

YEs, I sort of knew that about the bend profile of the Nippon 105T; on the Mizuno shaft optimizer, I fit into the Dynalite Gold XP R300. I will be trying a set of JPX 825 Pros with the Dynalite gold shaft.

I have tried the Nippon 950 GH in stiff - they felt stiffer than the 105T stiff, were harder work, and hit the ball higher. Not good. I have also tried the 1050GH in both stiff and regular. The stiff was too stiff; I could play the regular, but I think I prefer the 105T in stiff.

I'll look into the Recoils.
