Anyone else miss Johnny Miller & Gary ?

Not even 2 weeks in and Im sick of the Golf Channel.

As much as I disliked hearing Johnny and Gary talk about how great they use to be and what clubs they hit 25 years ago on that hole, Ive had about all I can stomach listening to Kelly! I cannot stand hearing her voice and may just start watching it witht he MUTE on. :drinks:

It's not so bad. Faldo was better when he had his whipping boy Azinger next to him. I think it's better than Miller and Gary easily.

I knew tgc was going to suck a bit. All they used to show was putting when they had nothing but the nationwide & canadian tour, and still they don't have enough cameras for the pga tournaments. Rich Lerner & Jerry folts have as much personality as a brown paper bag and the win zone makes me... ugh.... brrp.... :) . Sorry about that. I was never a huge fan of usa, espn, or the other network coverage, but I now long for the good old days. Only 14.918 years to go :drinks:

I believe that watching golf has taken a step back. I hear too many remarks being made that are intended to be funny, but their not. I think I can stand Kelly better than Nick. I think they biggest loser is "WinZone", the more I hear about it, the more I don't want to hear about it. Who cares about how often the percentages change. I just hope they don't have too much pride to let it go away.

I'm personally disappointed in Nick Faldo. Seems to me that he is trying to be somebody(an announcer) that he's not. Also, why did Kelly Tilghman get the job over all the other GC staffers? Maybe a woman gives a little different perspective on things but something is just a little frustrating, almost obnoxious, about listening to the two of them interact. I, for one, can't wait for networks like CBS to start picking up weekend coverage. Am I wrong?

I agree. I can't stand Johnny and in fact I hate him with a passion for his comments about players, but Kelly has to go! I like Gary...looking forward to David and Peter coming back.

I never imagined myself actually saying this, but give me Johnny. Actually just give me David and Gary, even throw in Rocco if you must. Put Faldo back in the box with Zinger. NO MORE WIN ZONE AND STUPID PUTTING LINES!!!! :drinks: Sorry, I thought if I yelled I might by some miracle be heard. :) CBS is tops in my book for golf coverage. When I am on the road playing I usually Tivo tourneys I want to watch. I haven't seen anything Tivo worthy yet! They don't show tee shots, they don't give yardages, and I have seen all the putting I can stand. It is like watching a pro Putt-Putt tournament.

I actually don't find it that bad. Then again, I didn't get TGC until last week....

 

Next week I am upgrading to a HD feed! Who cares about Kelly then? lol

I don't really mind them, but I'm a Miller fan, so I'd rather take Johnny and his "he's caught a buried lie, so he won't be able to spin it. He'll be lucky to get this within 20 feet, eh Roger?" comments any day.

 

Somehow the interaction of the NBC team just flows very well. It'll probably take more time for Kelly/Nick to gel. The Golf Channel still seems to have production values like an upstart local cable station. That doesn't help.

 

Of course, The Hope for me is one of the WORST tournaments for the year. 5 long rounds with amatuers and it seems like there's 5 billion golfers on the course. Even though it's a Pro-Am, the season seems to really not kick in until Pebble.

 

Oh, and The Win Zone sucks!

My suspicion is that TGC is doing fairly extensive market studies right now. If you get by all the (sometimes - er - crude and intense) criticisms of her all over discussion boards, the general consensus seems to be that Kelly is simply not yet ready for prime time. They probably did decide the team would need a few months to see if it could grow into the job, but if it is still grumbled about this extensively a few months from now, I expect to see some changes.

 

Kelly (to me) seems almost ready. I think she'd be fully qualified to run the LPGA coverage, and perhaps do color interviews and on course coverage on the PGA, but (IMO) she needs a couple of more years of polish before she should be on the anchor desk at PGA tournaments.

 

Maybe without Nick, Kelly would be different. But the banter between them is more like what you'd hear between a couple than from two golfers or two announcers. If I wanted to hear the guy/girl banter, I'd watch one of those annoying dating shows, of which there are a million. They spend less time talking about golf than Nick's "He should rub that big rock next to him for luck" or "That shirt looks like he got into a fight with a magic-marker and lost." Maybe he should stick to the ridiculous "He's really gotten himself into a pickle. He's gonna need to hit it soft like butta." I can't stand it.

 

Also, is it just me or does it seem like they show considerably less golf shots? I honestly think I saw more "golf" during two hours of the Target WC than I've seen so far this entire year on the Golf Channel's "coverage".

I'm not sure I dislike them. I think it's more I know that this is what I will have to endure if I want to watch golf on TV. It was better when all the major broadcasting stations, and even the smaller ones, were covering tourneys. We got a lot more variety of commentating and insights.

 

Now there's no more variety. It's like going out to the grocery store for ice cream and all they have is a freezer full of vanilla.

Guys- they are not that bad. What's the alternative? Its NO COVERAGE.

The nets don't care about early season events. They don't mean anything. And when George Lopez is the biggest draw at the Hope, you're in trouble. Bill Murray used to bring ratings for cbs. Not anymore.

Let's stop complaining and just be happy the head of Comcast who owns TGC is a die hard golfer and is willing to piss away a ton of cash..and lose on this venture...to bring us professional golf. Let's face it, if Tiger hadn't come around when he did, we would only be watching the majors on TV. Maybe

I agree with the above and will add that Faldo does not seem ready for the booth, Kelly should be on the course, and I think Nick should be on the course as well, Nick should not be one of the main voices you hear all day long. much like McCord or Feherhety, (although I think I would like them much better) A little bit of Faldo would be fine. Also he was much better when Zinger was with him to keep him in check.

My favorite is the long pauses of silence as a player putts, walks over picks his ball out of the hole, then walks and puts his putter on the bag, then assumes the hands on the hips waiting for the next guy to finish out stance, then kelly or nick makes a comment.

 

Plus the camera operators are horrible. Watching the coverage as they try to keep the ball in frame gives me motion sickness.
