decent course between Raleigh and Myrtle.. near Barefoot

We're making our yearly trip from Raleigh to Myrtle next month. Some of us play a "practice round" on the way down there. Last year we played Long Bay. The location was fine - it was right on the way.

 

We are staying at Barefoot, and would like to play something that isn't far out of the way the day before. Not looking or something that's going to cost $125 (we'll be there on a weekday). Need to keep it under $100.

 

Any ideas?

I drove by Aberdeen last week and it looked better than I can ever remember seeing it, Heather Glen is in fantastic shape as is Glen Dornoch and Shaftsbury Glen.

I'm not sure of the rates as we played local rates, but I was shocked at what some of these courses are getting for greens fees right now in Myrtle.

Think you will enjoy Aberdeen, good choice, just recently moved from NC and have played that course a few times in packages, fair test of game w/o being punishing, friendly staff.

The Big Cats lost my business a few years ago. My wife and I were on a weekend trip with another couple. Me and my buddy made a tee time at Tigers Eye. Turns out, they almost entirely lost their greens that summer. I've been playing golf 18 years and they were the worst greens I had ever seen. I could take a pair of scissors and an ax and make a better green in my front yard today.

They offered no discount and no apologies. I won't go back.

I haven't been in that area since the summer of 2010. We played Tiger's Eye and Leopard's Chase. We had originally booked Panther's Run but they had closed the course to install a new surface on all of the greens so they moved us over to Leopard's Chase.

If you want to stay close to your route and are trying to keep the costs down while getting a good value I'd suggest Shaftesbury glen. Always been in good shape when we've played and I believe it's really close to hwy 22. I'd avoid anything coming in on 9 except longbay which I don't think is as good a track as Shaftsbury. I'm assuming you don't want to head north of 9 so I won't point you way.
