Replacement shafts for my TT Black Golds?

Chitostyle

Recommended Posts

I'm currently playing Mizuno MP-60s with TT Black Golds (regular flex). I love them. Not having tried too many other shafts other than S300 in the past, I'm curious if you guys have recommendations for another shaft for my next iron set that compares to the Black Golds in feel and weight.

I have a tendency to launch slightly lower than I'd like, but find the Black Gold trajectory to be pretty ideal.

Not knowing too much about shafts, I'd like a shaft that helps me maintain a mid-high trajectory and, if possible, compliment my forged heads to offer a smooth, buttery feel.

Not a lot compares to the Black Gold - the closest your are going to get is Rifle. It's possible to tweak a set of Rifles to mimic the same flex, but the lower profile launch and smooth feel is harder to achieve. I wish TT still made them but alas that's the state of progress perhaps. I don't really know how you translate Black Golds to mid-highh trajectory other than if you're playing a softer flex than your swingspeed would normally dictate - they play well above their flex IMO.

Ah, the black golds. Probably some of my favorite iron shafts ever. I remember them kicking like a mule at impact, so it was a pretty distinct feel. I played them originally in Titleist 735s, then in some Srixon i-701 Tours which I still have as a back up set.

They were a heavier shaft if I remember right so any of the lighter weight shafts won't work too well. I too wish True Temper still made them, but I believe you can still get them through some of their fitting centers, but they won't be a stock option on any set of irons.

I agree with jaskanski regarding the lower launch, that's what I found with them too. For what it's worth, I'm currently playing C-Taper S+ right now in my irons coming from Stiff Black Golds. If the BGs came in something between stiff and x-flex, that would've been my choice for flex.

I haven't hit a set of actual Rifle's in YEARS but while the playing characteristics may be similar, the feel most certainly will be vastly different.

Like hazooos I currently have C-Tapers & love the feel & flight (mid to high but with penetration, unlike the standard KBS Tours which went too high & spun too much for me) - I too have Mizunos (MP62 which is a semi-blade) - If you can try shafts before you buy make sure the C-Tapers are on your test list - Good luck ... As a lefty, it's hard for me to test clubs (all my friends are righties), so I may have been mistaken thinking that my slightly lower ball flight was because of me and not the shafts I've been playing. So are the Black Golds generally thought of as a very low launch shaft?

The C-tapers intrigue me but the low launch might not be ideal for me.

Was exactly my experience with them as well. Tried them out for about two rounds and that was the conclusion I came to. Got rid of them very shortly there after. Feel was awesome though.

That was the general consensus back when they were more popular. Funny thing is, most low launching shafts lacked feel, but these were the exception. Most people launched them lower than most other things out there at that time I believe. If you like the Black Golds, you'll probably like the C-Tapers as well. I don't think the C-Tapers launch as low as the BGs did, but the C-Tapers are lower launching than either the normal KBS Tours or the PXi I had for a short time too.

C-Taper S+ will be my shaft of choice for the foreseeable future, no doubt. I like the feel, I seem to hit them further than the PXis I recently hit in the same clubs (mention same clubs so lofts are taken out as a variable), and the dispersion is great.

I definitely like the Black Golds as well. You can still find them on EBay, a storefront called Dallas Golf has them fairly cheap...I've bought a few sets from them. I have a set of Nippon 1050 GH in my primary set in stiff and find the feel and launch to be similar. I play the Black Golds in regular. Adams would soft step the stiffs to get them closer to a normal stiff, at least they did in the Pro Golds.

I thought Black Gold was medium weight, launch and spin? Not low launch, although they do play stiff to flex and stiffer always play lower given the same swing speed.

I have BG Reg in my mp-32's, ssx2 and it really made that iron for me. I still have them but now have the mp-64's with the Project-x 5.0. The only difference is that they are a little lighter but still the same distance and results. Probably depends on what type of swing. I tend to hit down more so than sweep with the irons.

Good luck.
