Custom built Versa Counterbalanced #1 Wide

I was putting the other day at GG with a Spider Blade and really saw the benefits to it. So I decided to try my hand at building my own. Started with my Versa #1 Wide, extended it 4", added 30 grams of weight in one of those golfworks counterweight plugs, added a Superstroke 17" grip and this is the end results. To my calculations I come up with 590-600 grams total in weight. Going to give it a run later. Just a quick roll, I may need to add a little more weight. Let me know what you think.

Cool project-

The trick is going to be getting the headweight up - it's pretty light already.

All the counterweight putters out there have fairly heavy heads - 370 or so to 400.

nicely done! the #1 wide has a 343g head so a bit more weight on the head may help but let us know how it performs!

I agree. Nice project. Is there a good way to increase the head weight? I don't know the weight of the Spider blade but the tank is 400g. The DLL may be even heavier.

Rose's SB is like 368-373, I think I saw posted somewhere. This head is not far off. Something to experiment with.

Actually found it. 358 gram head for Rose. So the wide is only 15 grams lighter.

I hated the 340g head on the Versa #7, but didn't want to add like an inch thick layer of lead tape to add enough weight to the head. So I had some Tungsten weight tape stuff, its slightly thicker than lead tape, maybe the same thickness as 2 or 3 pieces stacked on top of each other, but they are only 1/2" by 1/2" squares. Each square is 2g. I added 7 of them to the head of my putter, adding 14g and making the headweight 354g. Other than interrupting the colors on the base a bit, its barely noticeable and I have plenty of space to add more of those little pads or lead tape if I wanted. They arent the greatest for going over curves on wedges and all that, I tried it but for that I'd stick with lead tape. Heres a link to the same stuff I used. Check it out. EDIT: I've also been thinking about doing the same thinking with my Versa 7. Add just as much of that tungsten stuff as I could to get the headweight as high as possible, extend it to about 35", weight the back of the shaft and then throw my SS fatso on. I decided for me it's just too much of a project though. Let me know how it works.

Played 18 with it today. I actually like the weight of it. It is really hard to get the putter off line. Only real issue I had today was on putts outside of 20'. Those will take a little more practice time. I felt like I had to swing it a little more than normal. All in all, I like it. I already had the putter, so at this point I am only out $35 for the experiment. If your on the fence and want to try one, give it a shot. I think it is worth it.

i bought the weights suggested above and the same counterweights from golf works along with a belly putter grip and a 3 inch suggestion to make it 38 inches. I will let you know how my odyssey versa 1 works out. thanks for the suggestion though!

Before the Tank trend started I had the shaft of my Yes Callie filled with sand and a SuperStroke Fatso grip added to it. The result is really amazing! I have never been more happy with a putter.

So try filling your shafts with sand! It is really easy and the balance of the putter becomes great.

I now have 54 holes on this putter now. I am sold. I have made more 10-15 footers. 5' feet and under are almost automatic. I have not added any additional weight, I think this is the perfect combo for me. Thinking of having a sight line or dot milled into the head now.
