Must play in Phoenix/Scottsdale?

I am heading to Scottsdale in early September for vacation and I was wondering what are the must play courses while I am there?

I played all those last time I was out. Played most in the afternoon to take advantage of the reduced rate and even then it was over $100.

Troon gets a lot of love from out of state players, but it is way overrated and hardly a top 5 in AZ. Probably not even a top 10.

I liked Troon, but my favorite was TPC. It was so fun watching the tournament after playing the course.

I am also going to phx in october. I looked at alot of the courses listed and several of them are 36 hole facilities. Which ones would you guys recommend if you were going to play both courses at a facility. We will most likely do 2 days of 36 holes, and its always nice to not have to travel in between rounds. From my quick search it looks like Greyhawk and We-Ko-Pa both have 36 hole deals, but is there a better 36 hole facility than one of those two? We will be staying at the Arizona Biltmore, and would like to not have to travel more than 30-45 minutes to get to the course. Thanks for any info!!

Talking Stick is a great bang for your buck too. Although, Greyhawk and We-ko-pa are better!

FYI - in October, you will be dealing with the dreaded overseed. Most 36 hole facilities will do one course early and one late so they have one course open. You will need to look at the schedule to find out where to go.

Ill add Quintero - middle of no where but this is what desert golf is all about. We ko pa is awesome as well

Grayhawk is very nice. Would definitely recommend.

But, if you can find a way to get on (private club), [url="http://www.mirabel.com/"]Mirabel[/url] is amazing. Played there last spring just when the desert was starting to bloom. I've been fortunate enough to be invited to play some very nice clubs, and this Fazio course may be my favorite taking into account all factors (design, facilities, course condition, etc.) It's no longer part of the Discovery Land Company portfolio (even though it's still on the DLC website), but they have maintained the same experience you find at a DLC course.

Since no one has said it yet in this thread, WeKoPa Saguaro is best in state.

As for WeKoPa vs. Grayhawk, WeKoPa probably on top. I would rank the courses as follows:

If I recall correctly, Grayhawk (Raptor) has some condos/duplexes lining several holes. Personally, I didn't find them particularly distracting. But, yes, they are there.

Yes would rather play 36 at Wekopa than Grayhawk.

As far as homes go Talon is routed through more homes than Talon although none of it is overbearing to the point it takes away from the round. Wekopa is pure desert. There is one home that comes into view on 14 on Saguaro but that is it.

No houses at all at WeKoPa.

Grayhawk is part of a real estate development, however most of the playing corridors are the two-fairway-wide style of routing and fairly generous in width so the housing is not terribly intrusive.

we-ko-pa is booked.. playing both courses one day.. greyhawk raptor is out.. closed for overseeding for our dates.. what should be next on the list? talon? or somewhere else

Is your primary consideration a 36 hole facility? Or best golf available? I'd play Saguaro twice! Talon is nothing special.

Lots of places close to each other where you could get in 36. Saguaro plus SunRidge Canyon or Eagle Mountain.

36 at one facility was the goal for one day (this is covered playing we-ko-pa courses).. for the second day looks like we will have time for 1 round in the afternoon.. just want to play memorable golf course.. was planning on raptor, but can't due to overseeding, so i was curious about talon.. basically just looking for somewhere to play 1 round for our second day

Like I said, your visit coincides with the overseed and the experience will be dependent of the timeframe. Unfortunately, I have yet to see the schedule. When in October will you visit?

Our dates actually got moved forward.. So we are going to play we-ko-pa on Sept 27, and then we are looking for 1 course to play on September 28.

we were lucky enough to get on at Silverleaf through a connection at our club. one of my favorites anywhere. long and tough but very wide open and playable.

so it looks like my options are Grayhawk Talon, Troon Monument, or one of the TPC courses.. Seems most other courses that have been mentioned are closed for over seeding.. Of the 3 options is Talon my best bet? It closes the day after our dates for overseeding, does that mean the conditions will be spotty?
