Las Vegas in early August

I will be in Vegas in early August. I've played once at Wynn, and had a great time, but I really want to spend my dollars somewhere else. I'm planning on playing early the morning after I get there as I will be jet lagged coming from the East Coast. I was thinking about Desert Pines, but I could be persuaded to look elsewhere. I'm staying at the Venitian, and I don't want to travel far. I just don't have a lot of time. Should the heat be ok early? I thought I would tee off about 730 am. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Being stationed here in Las Vegas the early your tee time the better. When we normally go tee up its around 0630. That way when we are done around 1030-1100 depending if we are taking our time or just playing its not ridiculously hot. August will be hot so I would get a tee time around 0630. I have played at Aliante Golf Course, TPC Vegas(which is BEAUTIFUL IMHO) the courses on base and TPC Summerlin. I have not played at any of the hotels around the area just because I have not been playing that long, but I plan on playing a lot of them this summer as long as my children's sports don't get in the way. Have fun in Vegas.

I know you said you don't want to go far but I just wanted to plant a seed on Paiute if you haven't played there. I was in Vegas last week and got a deal on Golfnow for an early tee time for only $49. Loved Sun Mountain so much that I decided to take them up on their offer of a $40 replay at Snow Mountain. Some of the best maintained courses I've ever played and definitely worth the 30 min or so drive from the strip. The views of the desert and mountains are spectacular and unobstructed! I was planning on playing somewhere in the city until I found out that I could get a one day rental car for $16. I really lucked out with the weather and I don't think it got over 90 degrees the day I was there. Also, they claim it's 8-10 degrees cooler out there where they are than the strip, so that should help with your time of day concerns.

As far as the time concerns go, I played on a Thursday and was able to get both rounds in at 5 hours and 30 minutes playing as a single.

I was was in Vegas at the beginning of july. Of the 6 or so Arroyo Red Rock was my favorite. Course was in great shape considering the heat Vegas was experiencing. Was so impressed I decided to reround.

Second was Rhodes Ranch (SW Vegas). Played it in march and loved it. it was right by the house i was staying at. Reasonably priced, and in great shape. Not really close to the strip, but worth a play.

TPC LV was in good shape and a good experience.

I wouldn't recommend Las Vegas National. Played in March, spendy and was not impressed with the condition then. I cant imagine it gets better as it gets hotter. I don't think I would play it again.

Stay away from Tuscany, greens were falling apart. Several locals told me that happens every summer, either due to lack of watering or composition of the course.

Played Paiute Snow in march and If you have a car an absolute must. 3 great Dye courses. i would save for a trip you have more time. Nice club house with really good.

Going out there next week, playing Bali Hai on Wednesday (day I fly in) for a warm up round and just because I enjoyed the course last time I played.

Thursday playing Paiute Wolf at 7:57am. Renting a car for the day is a lot cheaper than taxi to and from. And the course has gotten so much praise here that I knew i had to make my way out there.

Anybody have insight on how the weather/course conditions are right now?

I played at Paiute in 114° weather, and it really wasn't bad at all. There was quite a bit of wind blowing though. Just drink lots of water, and often.

It's hot...really hot.

But, you know what they say, its a dry heat.
[/quote]As someone who grew up in the dry heat of West Texas but now lives in the 70% humidity of Dallas...I would take a dry heat every day of the week!

Stay away from Wolf Creek. The course is in terrible condition at the moment. Such a shame.
Coyote Springs is a much better option if you are looking for some secluded target golf.

Just a heads up for everybody..

I got a call from Paiute today letting me know that the course was heavily damaged during the storm last night... and they're going to be closed until the second week of September or so.. really disappointed because i was really looking forward to playing this course and had my tee time book already. Gotta see what the deal is with Bali Hai since I'm booked there for Wednesday too.

Right now Paiute is saying Sept. 7 but could be longer as we are getting rain right now. If anyone is looking to play at Silverstone or Aliante, you should contact the course directly. Many roads near those two courses are closed, I just had to take several detours getting home and I live between the 2 courses.

I know Silverstone closed today because of rain, but I'm not sure about it going forward. In light of these closures, if anyone wants to make the trip out to Primm, PM me and I will set you up with a good rate. There was light rain today, nothing similar to what North Las Vegas got.

Also, the Lakes course is currently closed for overseeding. The Desert course is open and in good condition. Hasn't had any prep work done to it. It won't close until Sept 16th for overseeding.

Since Paiute is closed and I'm only coming in for the weekend, I figure instead of canceling my car rental and just playing one round, I'd make the trip back out to TPC Las Vegas. Last time I played there two years ago I got stopped at the 12th hole because of a wind/sand storm. Called them Yesterday afternoon and they said they were up and running with great course conditions so that should be fun.

.......had my heart set on playing Paiute this time around though.

New update on Paiute: They will be closed until October 1 at earliest due to heavy damage.

Wow... that must have been brutal

Found out they got nearly 4 inches of rain in 2 hours and employees were trapped by floods. They were forced to sleep at club without power, I'm going to swing by next week to renew my membership and take some pics.. Guess I'll be playing a lot at Stallion Mountain since they are in good shape.
