Rookie's question - how much epoxy?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'll try to make my first DIY golfclubs. I know that I shouldn't overdo with epoxy. But I'd like to get quantitative cue. If I mix one inch from "part A" with one inch from "part B" typical 24h epoxy - for how many clubs should it be enough?

Sorry for stupid question, but I'm trying to start the new hobby (a new hobby? Which form is correct?).

AC has the application right. Not sure I understand the 1 inch part. Mix 1 dram to 1 dram in one of those plastic cups which are very handy. 2 drams is good for an entire set with quite a bit to spare. Have your towles and varsol ready for clean up.

Epoxy is your friend. I don't skimp, but I also don't fill the entire hosel. Make sure you use enough to evenly cover all of the surfaces. Also, I make sure that my epoxy is kind of warm, maybe just above room temp. before mixing so it will flow easier. As a rule of thumb, I dry build all clubs .5 swing weight light on steel shafts, and .25 swing weight light on graphite, to allow for the extra weight of the epoxy.

I like a light application of epoxy. You don't want a lot of excess getting inside the shaft tip. When plunging the tip into the hosel, I twist the shaft back and forth a couple times to ensure even coverage. If in dry-fitting you find a loose fit, put a small pinch of shafting (glass) beads in the epoxy when mixing. The beads tighten the fit and center the shaft in the hosel.

Hope you enjoy your clubs!

With regards to how much. If to much epoxy is use in the hosel, when you insert the shaft, the epoxy fills the inside of the shaft. If it is filled to full, epoxy dries and because of the bending and flexing of the shaft, above the hosel, the epoxy will crack and break off pieces, and you will have sliding rattles in your shaft.
The thicker the coat of epoxy, actually creates a weaker bond. A small amount on the hosel, throughly coated the inside, a small amt, on a prepped shaft, a small amount on the ferrule to keep it from creeping. I use baby wipes to removed and wipe off epoxy.

One inch of A & B is not enough for really anything. It's not so much about how many clubs it will do, but more about how accurately you can mix them to get a good ratio. Guys seem to have trouble mixing small quantities as opposed to larger quantities for some reason and then don't get a good bond and wonder what went wrong. Mix more than you think you will need.

Even for one club, I will lay down a bead 2-3 inches long. It gives me plenty to work with and some left over to let cure in the pan to make sure that it cured properly.
