Project X 6.5 ballooning ball flight

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Currently in PX6.5, it has been a good shaft to me, but I transition aggressively, and my tempo is fast. I watch a lot of Wyndham Clark, it is my favourite swing and one that I watch to model my swing around, so you could guess how I load the club ect...

I am now seeing a ballooning ball flight, reaches its peak early and it seems like it spins/drops out of the air.

Is this just a swing flaw? I get a considerable amount of spin from longer irons, I can spin a 5i 6k-7k. Let me know if there are any shafts that would help this though.

Keen to hear, thanks.

I also play the PX 6.5. The shaft wants to get in the air fast and stay there. A ballooning flight is unexpected for the profile; that's more like what would be expected from an X100. If it's becoming a problem, you might want to look at some KBS options (I have less familiarity with those but I've found them to be stouter). Going up a flex might also help.

Loft increases will increase spin, while decreases will reduce spin. You should get a look at dynamic impact conditions. The increased spin plus implied increase launch angle suggests you are not delofting the club as you once were. Without seeing any numbers, it is impossible to know how much or if that truly is the problem..... but your description of the problem suggests a shaft change isn't going to really fix the problem.

edit - or perhaps the wrong golf ball

I'd probably start here. It's a lot easier (and a lot cheaper) to change balls than it is to change shafts or completely overhaul your swing.

Also, you said that the PX "been a good shaft to me" which makes me think this is a recent problem... What happened? Did you make some drastic swing changes recently or something?

What ball are you playing? I spin it plenty with 6.5s and also have a very quick tempo/transition but I also play one of the spinniest balls off the irons (ProV1x). My ball flight is fairly high spin but not ballooning. You could adjust club lofts slightly or even go to 7.0 if you are really bringing a lot of speed (talking 100+ 7 iron). I find I can knock the spin off pretty easily if needed though and it gives me the most options/control.

I have always had a fast tempo and transition, and played X100, then 6.5 then 6.0 for over 15yrs.  I still have PX in my 620 MB 3-PW irons.  None of the PX shafts balloon on their own.  IMO it can only be the manner in which you're delivering the club head to the ball.

This is my experience: PX shaft gets the ball quickly to its Apex, then it travels the expected distance then drops; vs X100 has the ball gradually climb over the expected distance, then drops.

Like others said, check your dynamic loft. It's not uncommon for PX (especially 6.5) to balloon on someone if it too stiff because it can create an inclination to try to get it to load, leading to adding dynamic loft aka flipping. This could put spin in that range which in all likelihood won't be solved by a ball change. Maybe some old habits have crept back in on swing dynamics so you'll either want to work on that or consider a fitting to see if something a little softer that you can feel load more could help.

Agree with some of the above mentioned comments. Get on a launch monitor and get your delivery numbers. I’m partial to foresight for these measurements. You’ll want to

look at club head speed, angle of attack, dynamic loft and face to path numbers.

If these are all in decent windows then next easiest would be a lower spin ball. Shaft typically has the least impact so if you get yourself close after going through the last 2 options then look at shaft.

I play 6.5 PX LS, I only saw about 250-350 RPM difference with a 7 iron between that at PX 6.5

Damn. I thought I was a bit of a golf nerd but all of the answers in here so far are exactly what I’ve been thinking.

One thing that hasn’t been brought up yet is asking the conditions you’re hitting from. Are you noticing this in overall play off grass? On a mat? Is the typical lie a little fluffier or flatter? These all matter.

But yes, look at what everyone says above. More than likely, it’s a you think and not the shaft.

Hell, moving the ball up in your stance a half inch or applying some secondary tilt, even fractional, can cause these observations.

If you want to try a different shaft I would start with something tip stiff like the c-taper, tour v or modus 120/130.

Tour V and Modus 130 are not tip stiff.  They both have softer tips and get very stiff in the mid and handle.

I stand corrected and makes sense why I like the tour v. I thought the modus 130 was the same profile as 120?

From experience, agree 100%.

I have Tour V shafts in a set of TaylorMade Rsi TP Spec, and Modus Tour130 shafts both in storage.
