Life off the front tees had been kind. 48 Sunday, 8 bogey and and blow out hole 45 today pre work. Went to mid size tour velvet's on my ping Zings 2 to 5 to match my knock offs on the Goosenecks. Im getting better at hack out rough shots. I take pride that when you miss bad, we have better rough than last summers LA US open.

Played a 4BBB match for the seniors team yesterday using a Dunlop Peter Thomson, driver, Gradidge Bobby L:ocke 2 & 4 woods and J.B. Halley Tournament irons and putter.

 

Must be a year or so since I played the Halley irons but I've always liked them so not sure why I've left them out for so long.  Hit some very good approach shots (for me) and we won the match 3&1, more down to my partner holing some monster putts than my iron play!

I really like them because, although the picture doesn't show it very well, the paint fill is gold and green too.

Very attractive and interesting. The hozel is about as tall as the blade is long. Are these 1950’s vintage? Stainless and reminiscent design to some 53 Hagen Ultra’s I have. Yours might be more low profile but maybe that’s a 2 iron pictured.

I might have used just a picture as part of another video but not a stand alone video.

They have True Temper Pro-Fit shafts so I'd say 1960s.

The irons pictured are probably the 3 & 4.

Surprise day off. Suspected could be a short day so took the clubs with. Figuring I’d get some practice or maybe even 9. Ended up really short so I made it worth my while and crashed my all time favorite course. Keller Golf Course in Maplewood Mn. Just outside of Saint Paul, always been a municipal and tons of history here. Saint Paul Open was a regular tour stop here 1940’s-60’s maybe longer and tons of big names we love all throughout it’s history. Beautiful city park course with lots of mature trees although they’ve lost/removed a bunch last few years. 
 Up and down 18 over bogey golf round. 4 doubles and a triple. 1 birdie though. Funny thing is I drove the ball really good so I feel a lot better about it cuz that’s been a struggle till recently. DID NOT hit the fairway woods at all. Kept hitting them super fat. Felt really heavy and never noticed that before. I must have just been really steep cuz no way they are heavier than the driver. 

Even carried today. Jumbled bag.

Wonderful view. Would have made all of ya proud, wasn’t far behind the teenagers I was paired with. Even in front of them into the wind on a couple cuz they kept ballooning there drives. They were amazed at how far this rolled out. 40++ on a few. Surprised me on one of those. Triple came when I tried hitting a cut. I can kinda cut on demand with a modern but ended up toeing this so bad it went very short and right into all kinds of trouble.
Wonderfull little putter. Lightweight and good thing cuz fast undulating greens. Also after a lot of play was very treacherous around the hole. 31 putts total. Couple 3 putts mostly due to two 50+ foot attempts. Made a lot of slight breaking 4-8 footers right in the heart. 

Got along with this unique YAMAHA sand wedge nicely. Really produced a fair amount of spin on a few shots.

They really protect their short holes. Was 235 to this bunker. Jack said to never aim at trouble.

How was I supposed to know I’d hit it exactly where I was aiming. I’m prone to that slight pull draw so usually I can aim at something and end up left of it. Progress hitting it straight more often so gotta change mindset. 

Shortish par 5 downhill approach to a front to back sloping green and nothing good behind it. Of course I got suckered into it ending up in middle bunker. Had 215 downhill. Always be stupid. 

Another par 5 approach. I tried laying up 155 yards just right of bunker. 

Pull oops. 
This is borderline unfair. Long left bending par 5. Uphill to a ledge type of approach to here. About 150 out from green this bunker is. Thank god I’ve never been in it. Guessing you’d be lucky to get 60 yards forward out of this. 

17 and giant huge wide fairway. I hit it long but a dead straight push down right side of fairway to here. 115 to front and a narrow green sloping front to back. Got my P over but hooked it into the left bunker then skulled the bunker shot leading to my final double. 
 Forgot to take a picture but the course is most famous for 4rth hole cuz of a tree just like this right in front of a 120-170 yard par 3. No way of going left or right of that one unlike this one. 

Nice par 3’s too. I’m walking off the tee so right side isn’t this close. This was 146 center to slightly elevated green. Less than 131 is no good. Got a 1 putt par here. 

165 front 180 center 198 rear. 164 and you’re at bottom of hill. Slightly left or slightly long you have stance issues and right your in real trouble. I hit a 5 iron so poorly it landed at the bottom of the hill. Lipped out the par putt though. 

Pretty much how every fairway looked so driver roll out was incredible. Not bad for a $53 dollar course. $10-15 dollars more than my normal courses I play but was a treat. Even though I shot 90 on a par 72 it was one of those rounds that felt really good cuz I drove and putted so well.

Just a short loop before the rain. I don't think i can do anything at my swing speed with this, it doesn't spin much. Ill have to look into something newer I want a 24 degree wood. It float fades , knuckle ball

Knockout match today, played Dunlop Peter Thomson irons and a David Low putter.

 

I was 2 up after 6 but then lost control of my driver (John Letters) off the tee, awful lie in the rough on the 7th, lost balls in deep rough on the 8th, 9th and 10th and I was 2 down!

 

Shanked tee shot on the par 3 11th made it 3 down.  Steadied it for a bit but was still 3 down with 4 to play but then won 15 and 16 and halved 17 to be 1 down on the 18th tee, just over 200 yard par 3.  I hit a lovely 3 wood to 20 feet and thought I'd opened a window of opportunity but my opponent hit a great 3 iron just inside mine so I needed to hole the birdie putt for any chance.
I didn't, but it wouldn't have mattered as he holed his putt.

 

Enjoyable match despite my poor driving.

I got out a few days ago.  Back to the par 3 course which seems to be about all I have time for this year.  But it's still enjoyable getting out.

These are the 1961 Synchro Dyned irons.  They share the same heads as the 1960 model but they have Top Flite branded shafts that would appear on the 1961-1964 pro lines.   

They are shorter heel to toe than the '63-64 models I regularly use but have a nice amount of heft to them and the soles are thicker than the '63-69 models I rotate  throughout the year.  

I could probably play 1960-'68 Top Flite irons for the rest of my life and be content.  

 

The 3 wood is a '61 Model 86 Top Flite.  I do not hit this as well as the '61 MacGregor M Tourney that I've been using more recently.  But I think my swing was a bit rushed all day and probably had more to do with the user than the the actual club.

Although I play classic irons frequently with my semi modern set, I decided to go all classic today. 76 Wilson Staff irons, Wilson Sandy Andy SW, Wilson 1,3,5 persimmon woods and an Otey Crisman putter. It was warm and windy but had a decent round of 9 over 81. I love these clubs.

 

Tomorrow is Hickory Friday and it will be 1920’s equipment.

Working on some stance stuff, ive notice how much better I am first thing in the morning rounds versus post work. I want to STAND UP post desk work , I dont set my knee's right and it can lead to just awful arm based swing's. My hips only can do a good job if I set them right. Another thing ive worked on sunset this week, you have to show up to hit it out of the rough. I get in this mess i know it won't go as far so i was half *** swinging, its key to tell myself full swing it and HIT IT. Its helped, hit some more respectable longer shots out of the rough and when its a wedge I alway full swing it now with a decent release.  Got some 2 box's of Yellow ERC Softs 2023 on sale at Walmart, they rock around the greens!

 

I think our new stableford based league starts at my course this week, I can not wait the format sounds great. 

 

2nd birdie of the season this morning from the fronts, on the 96 yard par 3 (pictured). Also the 3rd tee box, that water on the right bring's out everyone's best slice some days lol

Got a full vintage round in. Light rain  so not a great recipe for the tight back I’ve been experiencing the last week. Never have had back issues, hopefully just a temporary thing. Shot 80 on a short 5400 yard par 68. 2 doubles so ok I guess. Being tight felt very un-athletic and believe me nobody’s ever confused me for an athlete. 
 

76 Apex irons.
Real late Hogan Edge CFT 3 iron. 20 degrees loft, offset, deep back cut and perimeter weighting to the max.
Speed Slot persimmons I had refinished last year.

All the old Hogan’s with the lightweight Legend shafts so kinda intentional with my back.
Hogan 53 wedge pairs great with any 56.
Muirfield S today cuz Special SI needs a grip.
First time I ever putted with a Bullseye. Interesting heavy playing yet light weight putter. Didn’t putt great but not bad either. No 3 putts anyways on wet slow greens. Had a hard time with alignment. Missed 4 pretty make able putts about 1 ball to the right of cup. Killed me on a 6 foot birdie attempt and a 4 foot up & down sandy par saver. Couple good drives couple stinkers. 

6 foot birdie I missed barely 1 ball right. Wouldn’t even call it a push. Just couldn’t trust my alignment. Have used other putters with no alignment and didn’t feel as awkward. Maybe it’s the more center ball position on the blade compared to a Napa style that I’ve become most comfortable with?? Was a great 140 yard 9 iron tee shot approach. I got an extra 5 yards of forward bounce cuz the wet splash on front of the green. Never consider a 6 footer a gimme but was a head scratcher on the putt.
These irons in particular i have noticed a few of those jumper shots. Every once in awhile there’s an extra 5 or more yards. Maybe cuz the blade is so small they just go right through all but the thickest grass. Not an un forgiving blade though even with the tiny size. 

Wasn’t liking the Hogan CFT 3 iron very much till I choked down to the bottom of the grip and hit a very low drawing 170 yarder under the limbs getting me to the base of that hill for 2nd shot on this par 5. Was just hoping for 150 and forwards. Maybe it’s a sleeper maximum forgiveness more or less 2 iron I should practice a lot more with? On my modern set there’s no in between on my hybrid. Love it or hate it so if I adjust to this 3 there’s possibilities.

Finally rocking a literal vintage bag after my Amazon grade bag's pockets are all full of holes. This Ping bag was overflow, I switched the ripped one to that.

 

Tons of mistakes for the first few holes. My buddy has talked me into hitting my mini driver and 5 wood more going forward, he isn't wrong. I hit them worse when i mentally go into the round saying "I can't hit those good" or "im an iron player:. I need the distance and i'll get better with path doing it more. I used both on the last hole. 

 

 

Clouds were unkind to us after 7:45 or so, low light. We all know how it is when you hit a cliff at sunset golf with depth perception. 

 

Bad scores leading up to this long par 3, hit an awful Sandy Andy shot trying to get 60+ yards from the rough ( depth perception?) and left myself like a 30 yard shot that I almost made, giving me a much needed bogey. I went bogey -> par -> bogey for 3 holes.

 

 

 

 

Ping bag. I got a cheap lot of old clubs with it 3 years back locally.
