Forged, mid size, thin top line, progressive iron set?

Recommended Posts

I have been playing my Taylor Made RAC LT's for almost 10 years now (http://thesandtrap.com/b/clubs/taylormade_rac_lt_irons_review). And I am yet to find any iron I like better than the ones I have now.

Having said that my swing speed has changed over the years and I would like to get stiffer shafts to reduce the dispersion I'm having at the moment (I need to go from regular to stiff). Since this is a costly excersise I might as well have a look at new irons :)

What I like in an iron:

  • Thin top line
  • Mid size clubhead (makes me feel more confident)
  • Good feel and communication (hence my desire to get forged irons)
  • Progressive offset
  • A mix of CB for longer irons to blade like for shorter irons would also be nice

I also like the weight distribution/feel of the RAC LT's, but I have a hard time finding out the specs on that. I have the 110 grams OEM iron shafts.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which clubs I should try and why? Non custom clubs / big brand clubs are also ok, but for the sake of keeping the thread clean please dont go into detail or send me a PM.

Thanks!

Ps. I'm a 16 hcp and I try to play every two weeks.

The Miura PP9003 and Epon 502 have a mid size head and thin top line. They don't progress to blades in the more lofted clubs and I'd caution against a mixed set as generally speaking sets with mid size heads are more strongly lofted and so you'd end up with a huge loft gap at the point you switched clubs. That said, I don't think you'd find a problem with the lofted clubs in either of the above mentioned sets. Both are fantastic.

Thanks for the reply. Both sets seem to fit my demands really well. I'm also thinking about having a try with the Bridgestone j40 dual pockets. Though hard to find in Europe they are incredibly cheap on offers at this moment.

You could go with some Yonex eZONE forged PBs. Great irons and I think you'll find the head size perfect! Off topic, but I lived for a year in Terbregge and used to play over Golfbaan Hitland. Miss the summertime weather!

I found a fitter which sells Yonex yesterday (also quite hard to come by here), I'll give them a try too. Hitland is the course I play second most here in the Netherlands, nice course to play and not very demanding, perfect for some eraly season rounds :)

Agreed; took me a while to get used to how tee times are done there. I got so mad the first time I thought a group on the front 9 had teed off in front of me!

Take a look at the Romaro V's or V type R's. I was on the fence when I first got them. They are a really nice set of irons.
I have the Vs now. No doubt the Vtype R's won't be too far away....

Good luck with your search.

Boy this sounds like me a year ago. I to love the LT2s. I have been struggling to find a replacement.
I have tried the following sets- Cobra Amp 2012 model, Adams CB3,Mizuno JPX 825, Mizuno JPX 825 Pro, Taylormade ro\\Rocketbladez tour, Bridgestone J40 DPC. By far the Bridgestones J40 win out. Excellent feel they are forged and buttery soft, They are a Midsize Blade with a thin top line. And very forgiving. I gained a full club in distance. Fred Couples uses them on Champions tour. BUT I can't wait to try the new Mizuno MP-54s. I think they are a perfect replacement for my LT2s. I'll keep the J40s as back. If you are worried about price you can get a set of J40s for about $500. The Mizinos will be a$1000. Let me know what you end up with.

Check out Mizzy... Great mix of forgings and affordable. MP-59's are amazing for me. You can mix a set with a ton of their options. MP-59's from 4-7 and 8-PW in MP-69's... Need some more help go JPX for forgiveness and MP-59's for blade-like precision.

Or break out your wallet and play Miura MC-102's in 4-7 and CB-202's for 8-PW.

Heck, check out the older TM RAC TP Forged irons or the JDM version. The non-JDM version I've played and they were awesome.

That's just described my Hogan FTX - soft (apparently Endo?) forged - feel as good as any of the last 5 Mizuno sets I've owned - thin top line - blade pw 9 8 - cavity 7 and up. Apex 4 shafts (similar to DG SL S300)

Cost me £80 2-pw on the bay.

You can spend more but for the price of a wedge you could at least give these a whirl.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just did an indoor demo session with launch monitor and after trying the EPON AF-302, AF-503, Titleist 714 AP2, Mizuno MP-54, Miura Tournament Blades, Miura Baby Blades, and both Bridgestone J40 models I walked away with the Bridgestone DCPs. They flew the farthest with the tightest dispersion and still had the buttery forged feel, even on mishits. My swing was on but once my legs started to tire out from hitting so many balls I noticed that some of the clubs were less forgiving, both distance- and feel-wise.

I would have to say, if I had to rank the clubs, in order from best to worst, for me it would be:

1) Bridgestone J40 DPC
2) Bridgestone J40 CB
3) Miura Baby Blades (Weirdly forgiving with a small head)
4) Epon AF-503
5) Epon AF-302
6) Miura Tournament Blades
7) Titleist 714 AP2
8) Mizuno MP-54

Now this isn't to say that the irons at the bottom of the list were so much worse than those at the top. It's pretty relative, and the differences overall weren't that great. They're all great products.
And with the exception of the J40s, the rest of the clubs performed and felt similarly, and the reasons why I ranked a particular iron in that spot are slight and often came down to look at address and feel. Distances and dispersion were very tightly grouped. Regardless, I would game any of these over my current set, the Ping i20s, which I still like a lot. I just wanted the softer feel of forged. And the added distance gains I got from the J40s are a bonus.

Adding to the list, I like my Royal Collection VS Tours a lot -- nice sized pocket cavity heads, limited offset, beautiful satin finish, surprisingly forgiving, and great feel. They go as far as my previous set, TM 320s circa 2000/2001, but with a better ball flight. As for shafts, both the Shimada Tour Lite and the new KBS V2s are in the same weight class as your current set. Good luck.
