Bretton Woods, Mt Washington Courses NH - Stay Away - Far away

Up here in NH with 6 others playing this weekend and we played 18 at Bretton Woods, Mt Washington Course today. We signed up for the play again before even going out... big mistake. We get out and the course is in pathetic shape. Lots of water damage this year. Fairways lots of dead hard-pan... and the greens. We're talking $15-$20 muni, play all day types of greens. There wasn't one that escaped the damage from the winter, all of them had about 20-40% dead areas (with the holes today all near them).

The types of greens that you putt and you're just sending up a hail mary to get it near the hole. 2' putts will miss due to bumps, that type of condition. You think for the money they charge, it's going to be in at least fair condition. Nooooope. Horrible. Horrible. Either, close it because it needs to heal, or don't charge the $99 green fees ($40 at most). We got there and after 3-4 holes we were all pretty much just mad, at that they were on the GolfWeek 2014 Best Courses you can play list. Maybe last year, but this is not a course you will be happy with, at all.

So, just letting everyone know. Beware.

We played two rounds at owls nest yesterday that was cheaper than one at Bretton Woods. ANd Owls nest is in GREAT condition.

Sadly I have to echo everything the OP said. A group of us also go up to NH for a weekend toward the end of June every year. The one course we always play is Mt. Washington. The other is usually Owls Nest. One year it was North Conway CC. This was the worst condition I have seen Mt Washington in. The greens were shot. Lots of other condition issue too. The whole region got destroyed this winter and to me I will give them a pass this year.

I love Mt. Washington and have never had a complaint in the past. Beware if your going anytime soon, but we will definitly be back next year.

I've played that course multiple times over the past 20 years. It is a resort course and the Mount Washington Resort is not really a golf resort. The winters up there are farging cold, with tons of snow and ice.... it is not golf course friendly climate! I've found a half eaten deer on the course before.... I'm pretty sure they don't have alligators up there.

That said. It's my favorite hotel in New England and the course is a pretty good track, but the conditioning will never equal what you have in the lowlands.

I played up there last summer and it was in phenomenal shape. Last years winter reeked havoc on all the courses in NH. Courses all the way down to the mass border had to open late because ice killed most greens everywhere. I assume pending this years winter it will be back to good shape next year.

Does anyone know if any courses in the North Conway area are still open? I have to be in the area, Fryeburg, ME actually, and was going to try to play Sunday River. They apparently closed last Saturday. I checked out Owls Nest too and they are closed.

Would greatly appreciate any advice concerning the best conditioned and closest course to the area that is known to be open!

Androscoggin Valley in Gorham may still be open.

I'm guessing we are going to be playing on temp greens in NH for several courses after this winter.

Yeah, no joke. What, 3-4 solid weeks of snow cover now down here in "tropical" southern new England where usually you can get rounds in between the storms.

We usually take a late June trip up there every year before the rates go up and not sure if it's gonna be worth it after this winter. will monitor it and judt go later in the summer if the conditions are bad.

Hey guys, I absolutely love the Mt Washington Hotel - nice hike to the Zealand Falls AMC hut, then hang out in the Adirondack chairs with a Tuckerman’s! I’m going to be there in mid July and am deciding if I should bring my sticks. Has anyone played it this year and is it in reasonable condition? I’d like to give it a try but not if I’m going to be disappointed.
