I'm glad you brought up this topic because I always wondered the same thing.

I personally always try to play at Pelican (both north & south), Trump National, Spanish Hills, Valencia CC, and Hacienda CC because you get a huge discount compared to their normal rates and they are phenomenal courses.

I personally really enjoy playing in competitive events (like the SCGA one day series). Have any of you guys ever been out for the one day series?

The one day series schedule is below:

It's really great bc you get to play at public courses on the WEEKENDS and you can win prizes and gift cards. Even if you are a hacker, playing in the competitive tournaments really gets your competitive jucies going and it really helps you improve your game. And I have never played a round over 5 hours which is really great for a weekend tee time.

I highly recommend it if you have never played in one already.

I just found out about these outings yesterday from a guy I played with. A little disappointed I missed the farms I hear that place is fantastic. I can vouch for Santaluz I have played there several times, it’s a good track. Anyone play the Crosby? Interested in that one I believe it still has openings

I haven’t thought the Farms was that great. It’s a tough course and in fairly good shape, but to me it’s like many Dye designs where he tries to trick it to play tough, and some of the tricks work out and a lot don’t. They did some redesign years ago and made it a lot better, but the Dye bones are still there and not always in a good way.

I’ve played the Crosby several times. It’s ok, nothing real special. They also don’t seem real welcoming there, as they don’t open the facilities at all. Sort of “come play, now go home”. Santaluz is a much better course, and they’ve had the lounge open for F&B.

Couple of things - yes, they are mainly on Mondays because they are generally held at private (high end) courses and therefore they don't want to impact membership play. Second, these things are super casual. Show, shotgun start, play and if the facilities are open chill out and relax. Super laid back environment. These are very worth doing. I've done a bunch and will continue to do them. Hacienda CC is a hidden gem.
