Monte's "Window"

For those of you that have been to one of Monte's clinics he talks about a "window" of where your back swing lands and if your in it your going to hit pretty solid shots. I thought I knew what he meant but still struggled at times from a pretty solid back swing position. The key (for me at least) is your transition and the release of the club needs to be decent as well. I'm finding that the hands can high, low, medium, laid off a bit ect. The "window" is pretty big as long as you transition well.

I'm rambling a bit but I guess the point is back swing perfection is not necessary. It's kind of a 'chicken or the egg' thing. I can see how different people put huge emphasis on the back swing, while others say it don't matter. And certainly on tour you see ALL sorts of different moves.

The better the backswing the less you have to do to have solid transition, downswing. You can still have solid transition and downswing with a funny-looking backswing but it takes more adjusting.

Bingo

That is often the case.

An often overlooked truth.

My specialty is turning a good backswing into a mess! Yank the handle a little and chuck the right shoulder out early, BOOM! (or more like FIZZ) It's the weak wipe to the right shot.......

And add world class talent/dedication, then you have a Matt Kuchar. Maybe I have it all wrong, but I can't stand having a backswing that is too flat precisely because it is too difficult to have a solid transition that feels powerful. And when I tell someone I hate it, an "instructor" type will say, well Matt Kuchar makes it work. Such a dumb comeback. Do I practice anywhere near the amount of time? Lost to Tiger in the US AM, then won it the next year? Do I "stiff" service help? No, No, No. Sorry, couldn't resist that last one ;)

Point is, I think it is really hard to make the necessary moves to turn a flat backswing into a solid transition / impact. Kuchar is great at it, but who else?

I don't know about flat, but Daniel Berger's move is pretty unique.
